Setting:
The story takes place in a small town, supposedly lancashire.
It is not a wealthy environment, neither a poor, but they have to make do with what they got, and that's alright. It's probably working/middle class. From Jeanette's point of view it is a conservative society with an edge of religiousness, primitive culture and christian community, lacking the ability to embrace, even stimulate the infantile mind of the youth. Overall the town is quiet, relatively normal and typical British countryside. There's little, next to no concept of time. Seldomly time is mentioned as a factor which allows one to navigate the structure of the text, more often, though, it's mentioned in telling stories or odd cultural events, in shape of weeks, months or seasons.
The setting creates a kind of countryside, tranquil, odd atmosphere, which I think is reflected in the way Jeanette feels like living there. Characterization:
The main characters are Jeanette, her mother, Elsie Norris, pastor Spratt and her father. Jeanette:
Jeanette is the narrator of the novel. She retells her life from when she is seven years old to an unspecified age. Jeanette is a very sincere child who with her heart believes in god and the church. As she starts in school she starts to long for the accept of the other kids, and eventually she becomes able to think rationally(realistically). Jeanette is an impression of goodness. Jeanette's relationship with her mother is ok. She respects her mother as she is taught, and she loves her mother. Her mother, though, is not very much around, and does not allow for Jeanette to befriend just anyone, which results in the very lonesome upbringing Jeanette has. Her mother has the role of the supervising mother. Jeanette's relationship to Elsie is very good. Elsie makes a very good friend for Jeanette, and she fills the hole, that Jeanette's mother never quite seem to fill. Elsie is very supportive, and
