Oranges By Billy Collins Summary
Oranges, have you ever felt something for someone so much you would do anything for them. I think this story is a good description of this because this person cared so much for this girl that he was trying to go out of his way to do this one thing for her and had to give up the only thing he had.

I think this poem can be taken many different ways, but the way I see it is that he cared so much for this girl that he would give up everything for her. I take it as a lesson for people to learn not to be so selfish all the time. This girl wanted this chocolate and he went out of his way for her giving the store clerk one of his oranges that he had left to pay for it because he wanted her to be happy. A good phrase in this showing that he didn’t care how much it cost, but that he was going to do anything for her would be “And when she lifted a chocolate that cost a dime, I didn’t say anything.” This shows that he knew how much it was, but he was still going to try everything to get it for her.

For example “fog hanging like coats in between the trees” saying there is a lot of fog in between the trees using the example of coats on a rack pushed together. I think the theme of this poem could be not to be selfish and think of others first. If you put yourself first all the time then most people won’t care to be around you as much. Looking at the title again I feel like it could be taken a different way where people think that he is just being a nice person, but the girl is selfish in a way making him get that for her when he doesn’t even have enough for it. The girl shouldn’t be that selfish. You can look at a story so many different

The entire poem is written with a tone of sadness or depression. This evokes the senses of the reader by being able to sense how the girl is feeling and see how the words of others affect her. It can be pictured, this little girl who plays with the Barbie doll and it is just a toy, but to others it is the appearance that society wants and she soon realizes that when a fellow classmate hurts her with mean words. She can not go on with the fear that everyone sees her as imperfect or flawed, so in the end she gives up on trying and eventually gives up on herself. A simile in the poem, “Her good nature wore out/like a fan belt,” the message here is that she has given up on everything.…

It makes me think about mosquitoes sucking your blood again. They do it slowly until you realize you have a huge bite. In the case of this poem, I feel like towards the end it gets kind of obvious that the girl's father isn’t going to live much longer. She feels bad about all the time she spent complaining about the mosquitoes and wishes she could get it back. The author portrays all of this using stanza length, and to me, that is quite cool and unique.…

By reading just the title I think the poem is going to be about someone dying. I say that because of the words eulogy and veteran. The line “do not stand at my grave and weep” means don’t visit his grave and be sad. The line “I am not there, I do not sleep” means that they aren’t there; they’re not going to show up. The line “I am a thousand winds that blow” is a metaphor which is used to give feeling to the poem meaning that he’s there for his family; that he wants his family to think about him every time they feel the wind blow. The line “I am the diamond glint of snow” is also a metaphor meaning he wants his family to think of him when they see the new, shiny snow of winter. “I am the sunlight on ripened grain” is a metaphor meaning he is warmth and golden. “I am the gentle autumn rain” is also a metaphor but it means that he’s gentle and he’s there when it’s raining. “When you awaken in the mornings hush” is a reminder to the family from the veteran. “I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight” is a metaphor telling his family to think of him when they feel that uplifting rush. “I am the soft stars that shine at night” is a metaphor reminding his family to think of him when they see the stars shining at night. “I am not there, I DID NOT DIE” means that even though he’s not on earth anymore he plans to remind his family that he loves them through the little things he’s mentioned throughout the poem. I think the attitude of this poem is…

I realized that this poem was about a son and a mother that was grieving over the death of his father, and her husband. They both that day had thought about the father and husband cause the son had called that day to talk to his father. That's when he found out that his mother, had made coffee for his father and had put it on the table like she does everyday for him. They both knew that he had been deceased for a year now. I know the death of a family member can be a traumatic thing for most families to every experience in their lifetime.…

It is about two people who have a lot in common but are too afraid to show their true colors. They looked for other people that were like them and they finally passed by each other and never knew that they were exactly alike. They were not being true to themselves therefore they missed out on an amazing encounter. The message I received from this poem is to always be true to yourself; never try and be someone else because you are unique and there are people who are looking for your unique personality. By being yourself you can be truly happy and find the people that are meant to be in your…

This poem really contains the main theme of the nature of people. She describes a stereotypical view that people do not take the time to appreciate and understand things. The poem honestly causes me a lot of confusion, which is why I picked it. This message can be strongly seen in very line of the poem, but mainly through the line "If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives. Do good anyway. " It basically tells me that although you do good, people may say that you are doing it for your own benefit and you may not be recognized or appreciated what you have done, so only do good because it the nice thing to do, not for recognition. Personally, I love helping people, and when I help some with something it is the happiness in their eyes and the worriless expressions that make me happy and give a sense of achievement. Their happiness in that split second makes me feel like whatever difficulties I had to go through, to help that person are worth it and it gives me satisfaction that I was able to help someone…
