The poem that I picked to read was “Grief Calls Us To The Things Of This World” by Sherman Alexie.
I realized that this poem was about a son and a mother that was grieving over the death of his father, and her husband. They both that day had thought about the father and husband cause the son had called that day to talk to his father. That's when he found out that his mother, had made coffee for his father and had put it on the table like she does everyday for him. They both knew that he had been deceased for a year now. I know the death of a family member can be a traumatic thing for most families to every experience in their lifetime.
The elements that I choose for this poem was Setting, Tone and Point of View. I think these elements represent what the poem is trying to get across the readers and what they are trying to make see how they are feeling at that certain time. Basically it is a feeling that is said, “For the definition of grief as a social emotion, it is important to distinguish between grief and separation on distress”.(Jakoby,N.R.2012). The first element that I would like to discuss is Setting. “Setting usually provides a social perspective as well, which identifies local customs, dress, speech and patterns of thought.”(Clugston,R.W.2010). So the part of the poem where he mentions, “He was using a blue phone in the bathroom of this Five-Star Hotel.” You can imagine that you are standing in the middle of the nice bathroom with a blue phone and trying to decide who you are going to call first. The second element that I would like to talk about is Tone. “Tone is the attitude reflected by the author in a literary work; it identifies the author's approach to the subject a story deals with.” The part that this relates to is “Can I talk to

In the essay “Variations on Grief”, author Meghan Daum losses a childhood friend unexpectedly. Brian Peterson’s passing had a seemingly small emotional effect on Daum. In fact, she doesn’t even feel the need to cry or be saddened by the sudden loss. Daum goes against the norm of how you’d think one would grieve a close friend. Instead of mourning she “decided to create an ironic occurrence rather than a tragedy” (Daum 157). She goes on with her life as if nothing happens. Daum even begins to lie about the events surrounding Brian’s death. She says that the lies are to help the Petersons cope. For instance, Daum was dishonest about Brian’s commitment to becoming a successful writer. In a way, she also lied about his death. She wouldn’t speak…

The poem that I chose was ''The raven'' by Edgar Allan poe. When some visitor is knocking at his door. He did not want to get the door, because he was to upset about the death of Lenore. But when he finally answers the door, no one was there and all he heard was the name ''Lenore'' an echo of his own words. He hears tapping once more and he opens the window and a raven comes flying in saying the words ''nevermore''. He asks the raven questions about Lenores after life and the raven shuts down his postitive feeling about afterlife and the raven responses in a negative answer.…

The true beauty of this poem for me, and what makes it so enigmatic, is the mutual recognition in a person, between two moments past and future, of one's frame of mind at the other moment. We are so long in time, that such connections are very, very rare, and to have a moment of empathy with one's future or past self is both to gain a momentary insight into the nature of life and aging, and to momentarily gain a new internal context to how we perceive the aging of others, and what it really means to…

I chose this poem because of personal experience. It brings back memories of my brother who passed away from Cancer. He was an amazing person, always full of life. His death brought back many memories of our child hood, the laughs the humor. I think back to us running around as kids, summer breaks, Christmas, and all the best times of our lives. He’s sense of humor was one of a kind, he was indeed the star on the stage and us his audience. These are moments in life that could never be replaced. Often I would lose myself in thought, and wonder who would help fill his shoes. Just as he came he was gone, as if he never existed. Everything that he worked for or lived for was gone. Over time you look for ways to bring joy back into your life, to turn the pain into happiness. I remember my sister coming home with a puppy a couple months later. The puppy helped for a while but in the end the house was the same. It didn’t change the fact that he was gone nor did the puppy replace him.…

So I feel this would make me wonder what the memories that he was thinking.…

Tyson explores different theories such as reader-response criticism to justify why readers interpret or criticize writings in their own way. In the poem “Consummation Of Grief” by Charles Bukowski, Bukowski is grieving over the realization that everyone dies after completing what they have been set on earth for, but conflict begins when he feels as though he has no purpose. He applies metaphors to compare this grief with nature itself such as “I even hear the mountains the way they laugh” (Bukowski 2012) giving the poem a spiritual almost magical genre. From the beginning, what was once a mysterious line, there was a closure in the end with not only the reader but Bukowski as well where his grief ends with the acceptance of his fate. A transactional…

You made very good point with the rhyme scheme I did not notice. I was not familiar with this style of poem but it was a nice poem. I like that the author wanted his father to “not go gentle.” I did not know that this poem was about the father going blind to fight that darkness. I thought that the authors father was dying.…
