Nursing has developed into a profession, in which many theories have been developed and presented in order to lend guidance for purposeful and meaningful practice. In general, nursing theories are based on four concepts that collectively make up the nursing metaparadigm: person, environment, health, and nursing. These four concepts represent a commonality in the nursing profession (Tourville & Ingalls, 2003). This paper will discuss the Roy’s Adaptation Model (RAM) and include a brief introduction to the theory, the rationale for selection of the theory, an overview of the theory concepts, the application of the theory to nursing practice, the benefits of the model to patient care and an educational proposal on introducing the model to a practice group.…

Self-care denotes those activities that can be performed independently by the client. While, Orem’s self-care deficit theory posits how people who are experiencing a deficit in self-care can be helped. Therefore, nurses must not only understand but they must also employ the five core principles in the of nursing care; these principles are; acting or doing, guiding, supporting, teaching and providing an environment that promotes health (Boyd, 2007). Reynolds and Cormack (1990) stated that mental illness can severely impair an individual's cognitive ability resulting in limitations in their judgement and decision making. In fact, this affects the client's ability to care for themselves. However, they explained that Orem’s self-care model is exceptionally effective in managing mentally ill client, because it allows the nurse to focus not only on the client’s inability but also on their ability. In fact, the nurse is specifically concerned with the client’s ability to meet their requisite self-care needs for daily living.…

There are many different theories that are used in the nursing profession. Each of these theories have their own concept and uniqueness that can be applied in a nursing capacity. All nursing theories have some form of connection to the advanced practice nurse (APN) practice. There are different types of theories for nursing circumstances. It is important for APN to obtain a good understanding and know how to apply the theory to their practice. Some of these nursing theories are Maslow's theory, Orem Self Care theory, and Watson theory. Maslow’s theory involves the use of a pyramid to address the needs of human beings reaching self- actualization. Paris and Terhaar (2011) used Maslow's Theory in combination with the National Database for Nusing…

One draw of the field of nursing is the ability for nurses to individualize their care plans for their patients. In order to ensure that unique patients are able to get healthy, they need nursing care plans as unique as they are. This means assessment and evaluation of each patient before and during care. Nancy Roper's desire to become a nurse started in childhood, and as a result of her experiences and education, she, along with two of her colleagues, developed the Roper-Logan-Tierney Model of Nursing to assess patients' level of independence and provide the best individualized care for them.…

In MRM, the nurse understands the patient by viewing it according to the patient’s perspective from her experiences (world), which is the “modeling” part. The “role- modeling” is using Miss X model of her world and develop interventions based on her perceived needs to heal in order to set specific mutual goals. Erickson (2014) concluded that all humans have the desire to live happy, healthy, and have a purpose in life (Erickson, 2014). In addition, the HPM, a person’s motivation to change depends on her prior behavior based on her personal belief, affect, and knowledge of health promoting behavior. The more committed a person is, the greater the chance of maintaining that behavior. Using both of these theories have synergistic effect,…

Despite the comprehensiveness and the wide applications of Orem’s theory, there still some issues regarding its clarity. Orem’s theory is known for its multiple terms that can make the learner confused. According to Mendoza, et al (2004), most of the students who are studying Orem’s work are perplexed on the different terminologies with similar meanings. For example, Orem both defined self care and self care agency as learned behaviors/abilities that deliberately regulate human structural integrity, functioning and development. A similar definition is also noted on Self care action. Another is the difference between Therapeutic, Practical and Health deviation self care need/demand. All of these terms are defined as self care needs or…

The profession of nursing requires a capacity and joy for caring and healing others both mentally and physically. Nurses spend their careers caring for patients and their families often in the worst and most frightening periods of their lives. Nursing responsibilities can be lengthy, stressful and physically and emotionally demanding. The demands of the nursing profession coupled with the nursing shortage and longer work hours put even more stress on nurses. Despite these extreme demands, many nurses do not fully appreciate the importance self-care. Yet without proper care for themselves, nurses are not able to provide the best care for their patients. “Self-care and self-healing is a critical component of being able to provide holistic nursing because holistic nurses recognize that they cannot facilitate healing unless they are in the process of healing themselves” (Cohen, 2010, p.1). For this reason and many more, nurses need to allocate time and energy for caring for their own needs as well as needs of their patients. With this is mind I adopted an exercise program as self-care modality for my independent study. Over the course of my independent study I researched the importance of self-care, how exercise is an effective self-care modality and the how I used my self-care modality for my personal and professional development as a nurse.…
