The benefits of self-evaluation/self-assessment as it relates to leaders today
Introduction
Studies of, and teachings on organizations, companies and their leaders of various types and origins has been around for years, it is, however, only in the last 2 or 3 decades that focus has been put on the more non-technical soft skills of management and managers by these studies and teachings, and courses on these have been added to the curriculum of business schools. (Robbins & Judge, 2001)
I will, in the following, discuss the benefits of self-evaluation/self-assessment as it relates to leaders today.
Discussion
For many years, emotions were frown upon as something unwanted, undisciplined and unprofessional in business. (Clawson, 2001) However, there seems to be a consensus building nowadays that knowing, sensing, showing, understanding, discussing and using emotions and the behaviors they create, or are an expression of, are beneficial not only to leaders and managers, but also their organizations. Study of these people and interpersonal skills are called Organizational Behavior often shortened to OB. OB looks into how an organizations behavior is formed and influenced by the individuals that makes up its groups and structures, in order to learn from it. These lessons can then be applied to improve the effectiveness the organization. (Robbins & Judge, 2001)
One of the aims of this, what one could call, “knowing, showing, using and understanding” trend is for the leader to obtain a greater understanding of himself in order to become what Bill George coins an “Authentic Leader”. Such a leader who knows and always employs his or her values with passion and determination using and winning hearts and minds will also get a better understanding and sense of what’s moving within his or her organization and its people. (George, et al., 2007)
