Support children and young people’s travel outside of settings.
1.1. Describe the organisational and legal requirements for children and young people’s travel outside of the setting including adult/child ratio requirements
As an organisation of any visit it must be the safety of all participants, and in this, as in all other respects, both the DfES guidelines and the School policy must be complied with. Dependent on the nature of the visit and the age of the pupils - staff must therefore check that they comply with all school requirements and regulations. The organiser must be satisfied that the venue is a suitable one, with all that this entails, and, where applicable, that any officials from the venue who will be involved in the visit, are qualified and dependable.
The legal requirements to take children and young people travel outside setting comes under, Safety in Outdoor Education (1989) (DfEE), the DfEE Circular 22/94 Safety in Outdoor Activity Centres and the booklet Health and Safety of Pupils On Educational Visits 1998. The
Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1992 have also been considered in formulating this policy. (Taken from Donhead’s Educational Visits Policy)
The impact of these polices could lead to having some of the events being cancelled due to restrictions on height, age or even weight. The adult to child ratio for 0-2 years is 1:3, 2-3 years is 1:4, 3-8 years is 1:8, and for over 8s its 1:8 then 1:10 for every additional 10 children (OFSTED requirements).
1.2. Describe the different travel arrangements which are appropriate to the individual needs of children and young people and the range of journeys which are being undertaken.
Walking: if you’re taking a group of children or young adults to the local library, park or local research you must take care when walking with them due to being in a public space. I would make sure that the group are in pairs and kept to far
