Organizational Planning
“Planning is often called the primary management function because it establishes the basis for all the other things managers do as they organize, lead, and control” (Coulter & Robbins, 2012, p. 205). There are two types of organizational plans, operational plans and strategic plans. Operational plans are short-term, specific, standing, and involve a specific operational area of an organization. Strategic plans are long-term, directional, single use, and applies to the entire organization.
“Maxim Integrated Products, Inc. (Maxim or “the company”) manufactures and markets a range of linear and mixed-signal integrated circuits (ICs)” (Maxim Integrated Products, Inc., 2013, p. 4). The company produces these products for several sectors including industrial, communications, consumer, and computing markets. Maxim provides digital services, linear devices, and mixed-signal devices making up three operating segments within the company (Maxim Integrated Products, Inc., 2013). Although there are three operating segments, all three combine into a single segment. A strategic plan for Maxim will focus on the larger, individual segment that the other three segments combine to create.
A feasible strategic plan for Matrix Integrated Products, Inc. is to increase productivity therefore increasing sales to the company’s larger customers to avoid a material adverse impact on the company’s financial condition. Developing the strategic plan involves defining the company mission, to deliver innovative analog and mixed-signal engineering solutions that add value to its customers ' products. The next step is developing the goals and objectives and creating the strategies to attain the goals.
