It teaches the importance of certain life qualities and some lessons to take away. The cheerleaders compete at compititions against other teams. Knowing this information still makes people indecisive in their decision of if cheer qualifies as a sport. According to Eileen Lofrese (Macedo, 2010, para. 10-11), most people can’t decide whether cheer is a sport or not because of its inconsistency. Some schools may only have a cheer team that cheers at games, but other schools have a competitive varsity team. Coach Stevens (personal communication, January 20, 2016) says that she believes cheer is a sport that isn’t fully developed yet. She…
One may be worried that a child may be left out by the coach or the other teammates ("Pros and Cons of Youth Sports Participation). According to Philips, children make more friends and build stronger relationships with teammates and the coaches rather than being left out (Philips 26). Injuries also play a big part in why so many people do not play sports at a young age. Actually, having this physical activity helps strengthen bones and muscles, which help make injuries happen less. People also believe that children will have too much organization because of having to listen to the coach all of the time instead of making one's own decisions and mistakes. Organization is good for younger kids because if there is no organization at all everyone will be out of control and not knowing what to do ("Pros and Cons of Youth Sports Participation"). Even though there are many things that could happen to children playing sports, there are always ways that one can do to prevent…
This experience in fact has provided me with many different growth opportunities. One in particular is: teamwork. Many people underestimate the athleticism that truly goes into the sport of cheerleading. Three girls work together to put another human being roughly ten feet into the…

Cheerleading is typically, in the United States, a year round competitive sport that includes at least three sports seasons. The typical sport starts beginning of summer with the usual stunting camp, then fall, winter, and spring. Sometimes though it isn’t just for four years of high school and then it is over. According to George GS (1990) most cheerleaders start at an early age and is estimated to include over a million participants between the ages of elementary school and professional cheerleaders for sports teams. As you can see not only is cheerleading a ten month sport but if a person decides to start at the age of five until the age of twenty-five then they will have done cheer for two hundred months out of their cheerleading careers. Out of this time these kids have also been in school which calls for studying, time with friends, and once they hit the age of sixteen or seventeen they are giving up some time of not working. Every year the school work is getting harder and it seems as if more and more homework just appears. Between the usual times of after practice and bed time…
Cheerleading is one of my most defining life experiences. The sport allowed me to explore not only my leadership qualities, but also my own mentorship abilities. From a newbie to cheerleading in middle school, I grew and developed into a role model on my cheerleading team in high school.…
Lastly, children should be on a competitive sports team because you learn how to work as a unity and and social skills. In the article “Why I Don’t Want my Kids to Play Team Sports,’’ Jeff Pearlman states ,” When the game ended, we’d all go out to the neighborhood bar to talk and eat and drink the night away.” Once you join a team, you start to make friends. These…
Most people have an activity that they highly enjoy and would recommend to other people close to them. Some activities that people enjoy can be educational while others are more of a hobby. An activity that is educational that I enjoy doing is cheerleading. I have been a cheerleader every year since I was seven years old. Needless to say, I love the sport and everything that has to do within the sport. Cheerleading is a sport that teaches discipline, assertiveness, and how to form bonds with other people. Cheerleading for females officially began in the 1920's at the University of Minnesota. In addition, NFL teams started using cheerleaders to add a little support in the 1960's. It more than likely originated a little earlier than the 1920's,…
Sports also help prepare kids for life and how to deal with real life situations. This new found confidence helps them succeed in school, personal relationships, and…
To me, cheer has taught me to be a well-rounded person. And although I’m just now getting the hang of it, having cheer four days a week, plus the out of nowhere added practices, has definitely taught me to balance my school, social, and athletic life. While my final year in high school is coming to an end, I hope my cheerleading career is only just beginning. With the major impact it has had on me the past years of my life, I hope to furthermore my experience in college, and who knows beyond that. With the friends made and the memories I’ve experienced with my team, I really do believe that cheer is more than just a…
Besides impacting my grades, cheerleading has also boosted my overall perception of myself. My sense of confidence has improved as well as my leadership skills from making up and teaching choreography and calling cheers at the games. I have learned to work with adults from experiences with my coach and assistant coaches. During my varsity years, I served as a role model to the junior varsity, earning the title “All Around Cheerleader” twice. This was an award voted on by my peers. Cheerleading has also influenced my work ethics. It has been a great character builder and this has helped me land my present job at Fortuna Ace Hardware and Fortuna Florist.…
