How Cheerleading Is A Sport
Most people have an activity that they highly enjoy and would recommend to other people close to them. Some activities that people enjoy can be educational while others are more of a hobby. An activity that is educational that I enjoy doing is cheerleading. I have been a cheerleader every year since I was seven years old. Needless to say, I love the sport and everything that has to do within the sport. Cheerleading is a sport that teaches discipline, assertiveness, and how to form bonds with other people. Cheerleading for females officially began in the 1920's at the University of Minnesota. In addition, NFL teams started using cheerleaders to add a little support in the 1960's. It more than likely originated a little earlier than the 1920's, …show more content…

Over the years, I've cheered for multiple teams. Furthermore, all of the teams I have been on are filled with unique and diverse people. However, the most important thing is that you can trust all of your team mates. Trust is vital for all teams that you are a part of. Whether it is football, basketball, lacrosse, et cetera. If the team doesn't have trust, regardless of talent, it will not be a winning team. Everyone is at risk during any time while cheerleading to be injured and you have to trust everyone around you that they will try their best to keep you and themselves as safe as possible. Also, when you are on a team, you get the chance to become closer to the people who are around you. You get to practice with your team, you compete with your team, and you perform with your team. Sooner or later you end up closer than you once were. That is my favorite part of being on a team. Normally, by the end of a season you all have grown to be a cheer family that are still going to be close even after the season is …show more content…

Fans are what keeps you going when it is sweltering hot outside and you just want to run inside and take a nap. They cheer you on whether you are good or bad. They want to see you do your best and hit every single beat that drops. You hit a stunt on beat and the whole crowd gives you a standing ovation. Performing at halftime during a football or basketball game is the best. The crowd isn't as judgmental as a competition crowd can be. You drop a stunt and recover? They go crazy! They're the best crowd to perform in front of, therefore, making your performance 110% better. Of course, you're going to be nervous when you perform in front of a crowd. Sometimes I get those little butterflies in my stomach right before we hit the floor. However, once you get out there and start doing your thing it all melts away and is replaced by a wave of up most confidence. I love performing and screaming to the point that by the end of the game my voice is replaced with a sound similar to the scraping of wood. If you go home with your voice not sounding like every vocal chord snapped, then you didn't do the best you could

Competitive cheerleading has never been called a sport according to the government. There has been an ongoing debate as to if cheerleading fits the definition of a sport which is “an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature” (Dictionary.com n.d.). By that definition you could interpret it to mean cheerleading is a sport, but there is much more to being a sport than meeting a definition. Competitive cheerleading does require specialized training, extensive practices, and a dedicated team; but to become a sport there are several problems that must be addressed. There is not a consistent set of competitions, no standard set of rules, and no regulations for judging. There has also been many court debates on this subject with cheerleading always on the losing end. In order for cheerleading to become a sport these problems must be addressed. Once this is addressed then cheerleading could become an official sport and the athletes would be eligible for athletic scholarships for full tuition amounts.…

The reputation of partaking in the sport is further magnified because cheerleading is in a category of activities that many people would not even label cheerleading as a sport. As a college cheerleader, I hear other men’s opinions and the school’s athletic department constantly express how cheerleading isn’t an actual sport. The perception that cheerleading is far from being a "real" sport implies that men must be playing the appropriate male qualified sports, such as football or other aggressive contact sports. This is said as a way for boys to demonstrate their level of masculinity (Suitor and Reavis). Such remarks provide an appalling outlook on the significance of participating in a "real" sporting activity in comparison to a feminine sport.…

I recall being the youngest girl, cheering with others several years older than me, when I began Area Youth Football cheerleading way back at the age of five. I had tried other sports such as soccer and basketball, however they didn't electrify me as cheerleading did. I instantly fell in love with the sport of cheerleading. No matter what kind of day I have had or what day it is, cheerfulness and excitement springs up and carries me during, before and after the games. My passion for dance has also allowed me to create many choreographies for my school, such as a dance routine for our school’s panther pride theme song, football and basketball cheers, and chants, and entertainment performances during games’ timeouts. Many people fail to realize the true purpose and beauty behind cheering for it revolves around the art of choreography. My viewpoint of cheerleading goes beyond the fancy bow, the shell crop top, the socks, the skirt, and the tennis shoes. As I move with much enthusiasm and avidity, I become the uniform. Even though cheering has been something I have done for ten years of my life, I challenge myself to become a better cheerleader every…

As an athlete, you only want success for your team. For me, all-star cheerleading was a mixture of success and anything but success. Everyone had countless of injuries, blood was shed, tears happened every practice. Everything is on the line with this type of sport. Just one mistake and the months of practice can feel worthless. It feels like a waste of time but it only strives you to work harder. In the end, the work is worth it.…

Something that I describe as a talent that is meaningful to me is cheerleading. I have been a cheerleader for as long as I can remember. Cheerleading, over the years, has become a very important part of my life. Through cheerleading I have learned the values of hard work and being a part of a team. People often confuse cheerleaders as girls who just stand on the side and cheer; but it’s so much more than that. With every tumble pass and stunt we put ourselves through extreme levels of difficulty and sometimes pain. Even still to this day, my doctor encourages me to quit but I will always believe a quitter can never win. Cheerleading has also allowed me to mature into the young adult I am today. Majority of the leadership responsibilities I…
