Cheerleading Is Not A Sport Essay
Over the last few years there has been a lot of arguments about how cheerleading is not a sport. Some people would disagree that cheerleading is not a sport people think this because they have never done cheerleading before. Cheerleading is not easy it takes a lot out of work, people have to ready to work because people are not alone you have a team that counts on you. People think that it is easy because you are just in quote “Lifting people in the air.” it is not that easy. Cheerleading is not just going practice and working hard, you have to push yourself until you feel like you are going to pass out. Some stuff they do it make sure you are ready is running around the gym to cheer music and then stopping when hr turns it off and then start running again when he turn it back off. Also squats, lunges, pushups, leg lifts, spits, planks, and crunches. That's not even all of it it's hard at first to try and do all of this but it gets easier the more the team does it. …show more content…
That is not the case at all yes cheerleaders wear skirts and tops, but that is for the team to look good on stage. The team can not just go on stage in tshirts, and shorts. The uniform also has to be comfortable to move around in because the team is picking people us and tumbling in them. The team does not just get judged on if the stunts hit, but also how tight you arms are in your motions, how high the teams jumps are, also how well the music is that the team is doing the routine to. In sports the team is not judged it is about how well you play. Some people may be better at sports than the others but for cheer the coach makes sure to put people with the same skills on one team. They do this because there are rules in cheer that has the different levels of cheer and the skills you must have to be on that

Competitive cheerleading has never been called a sport according to the government. There has been an ongoing debate as to if cheerleading fits the definition of a sport which is “an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature” (Dictionary.com n.d.). By that definition you could interpret it to mean cheerleading is a sport, but there is much more to being a sport than meeting a definition. Competitive cheerleading does require specialized training, extensive practices, and a dedicated team; but to become a sport there are several problems that must be addressed. There is not a consistent set of competitions, no standard set of rules, and no regulations for judging. There has also been many court debates on this subject with cheerleading always on the losing end. In order for cheerleading to become a sport these problems must be addressed. Once this is addressed then cheerleading could become an official sport and the athletes would be eligible for athletic scholarships for full tuition amounts.…

In my opinion I think that Cheerleading should be a competitive sport because cheerleaders work as hard as all other sport players do. For example cheerleaders show muscle, athleticism and agility when practicing and cheering at games. Cheerleaders show muscle because they lift other people they throw and stack people on top of other people to make a pyramid. They show Agility because when doing cheers they have to make sharp and quick movements with their hands and their feet. I don’t think that it’s fair that cheerleading isn’t a competitive sport because it doesn’t involve a ball. That is why I think that cheerleading is just as much as a sport than any other…

It teaches the importance of certain life qualities and some lessons to take away. The cheerleaders compete at compititions against other teams. Knowing this information still makes people indecisive in their decision of if cheer qualifies as a sport. According to Eileen Lofrese (Macedo, 2010, para. 10-11), most people can’t decide whether cheer is a sport or not because of its inconsistency. Some schools may only have a cheer team that cheers at games, but other schools have a competitive varsity team. Coach Stevens (personal communication, January 20, 2016) says that she believes cheer is a sport that isn’t fully developed yet. She…

Underhill ruled competitive cheerleading as not being a sport. Considering the physical demand of the activity, the court system should reconsider competitive cheerleading as a sport.…

Most people say cheerleading is not a sport, but to me it is. It all began when I was four years old and my mom signed me up to cheer for the Harrisburg Packers. I was nervous at first, but then it turned out to be a lot of fun. Everyone on the team was tall except for me and one other girl. Her name was Tatum. The first thing I thought was that I was going to get picked on by all the other girls because I was so little and shy, but it turned out to be totally different.…

When the word "cheerleader" comes to mind, many think of skinny blondes shouting "go team" while waving pom-poms in the air in short and skimpy shorts. Well, its true. All cheerleaders are meant to do is help get the fans more into the basketball and football game. So, what's the purpose of these dumb blondes? Absolutely nothing. To make it onto this squad you need only a few credentials: you must be close to failing (actually failing will get you kicked off by the administration), dye your hair blonde, wear your skirt half way up your ass, and have a positive eating disorder (any to make you skinny). With these few qualifications, your chances for being a part of this team are great. So, why doesn't everyone start failing and throwing up their food? Being a cheerleading is an instant access key to popularity. I mean, who doesn't like cheerleaders? Their easy to get into bed with, their stupid so you can walk all over them, and they have good bodies because they don't eat.…

When I asked Alexis, a cheerleader at Thornton High what her thoughts were on cheer being a sport, she said, “It bothers me when people say what I do isn’t a sport. I work out, I compete, I am a part of a team, I practice. I know we don’t actually play a game or throw a ball but that is the only thing that sets us apart from the sports. Cheerleading is as much of a sport as football is.” As I continued to speak with Alexis she informed me that a sports physical is required to participate. It made me question, if cheerleading isn’t a sport then why is a sports physical required to be on a high school cheer squad?…

“You are not an athlete.” Tanya said. “You do nothing, except stand around on the sidelines half-cheering.” Jaqueline added. “That’s not true! Us cheerleaders are NOT some rec team. We are all-star cheerleaders. There’s a difference. We put in hundreds of hours of work we put into a two and a half minute routine.” I fired back. “Whatever.” Tanya said and walked away with Jaqueline snickering next to her. The activity of cheerleading should be a sport for many reasons. It has many risks, and requires rigorous training. Over 1.5 million people all over the world participate in cheerleading, and that is just all-star. Cheerleading should be considered a sport.…
