The ideal of running shoes has been an ever changing and constantly growing aspect for many who strive to improve their overall running experience and performance. The history of this invention originates in 18th century England where a breakthrough was made by a man named Wait Webster who patented the concept of a rubber sole for shoes. Until this time the first attempts at making a shoe such as this were from leather which tends to stretch when met with water so, obviously, these designs were unsuccessful. But, from the rubber soled idea, another inventor by the name of Joseph Foster, who went on to found the company that is known today as Reebok, came up with the possibility of attaching spikes at the bottom for increased performance ("History of Running Shoes."). Generally, they were described as a solution to extreme cases of pronation or running style but I was curious to see what other reasons / benefits for which they may be used. Orthotics, as they pertain to running, are inserts that are implemented below the foot and above the shoes’ cushion. They serve to correct any inefficient or potentially harmful patterns in the leg while walking by altering the angle at which the foot hits the ground. ("Orthotic.") However there is a downside to these innovation; custom orthotics prescribed by doctors can cost anywhere from $375-450. Furthermore, even when they are received it takes time to break them in and get used to them (Spiker). But, in the end, runners will do what they have to to continue doing what they love and orthotics are just another example of the amazing innovation that is sparked from
