Osama Bin Laden Thesis
Osama bin Laden

On the morning of September 11,2001 nineteen men hijacked four planes. Only hours later 2,977 innocent people were killed. Have you ever wondered what a criminal mastermind could contribute to a society? I thought about the same thing when I saw Osama bin Laden’s name on the list of people to choose for this project. This is the main reason why I picked Osama bin Laden for my report. I wanted a challenge, not an easy look up in two seconds type of research report. Osama bin Laden actually did contribute a few things to our society, not to give him credit, but he did indeed contribute something. “No man has had a greater impact on American culture in the 21st century than Osama bin Laden.” (One-man show:How Osama bin Laden). This

bin Laden’s mother and father were distant because of Hamida’s (Osama bin Laden’s mother) independant personality.Mohammed (bin Laden’s father) had many other wives and they made Hamida the outcast and called her al-Abeda (the slave). This did not help bin Laden’s status in the house, because after the other children heard his mother’s nickname, they came up with one for him, and they started to call him Ibn al-Abeda which meant (son of the slave). His mother, Hamida, was soon sent to a home for Mohammed’s ex-wives. The only attachment bin Laden had to anyone in the family home, was to Mohammed’s first wife, al-Khalifa. Young bin Laden became a shy, introverted boy.(Biography Osama bin laden A&E Alex Woolf). When bin Laden’s father died everything changed, now he and his mother after a couple of months in Tabuk, returned home to Jidda, but there were more unhappy years. In 1988, Osama bin Laden founded Al-Qaida, and what started all of …show more content…
On 9/11 many things changed, and our society was the main thing. Many of our everyday lives were changed because of one event that affected millions. Osama bin Laden did not just change the US with new types of security, he unified our country and made us realize how important staying together as a country was. His objective was to destroy the United States spiritually, physically and economically , but it had the opposite effect in some of those categories. He definitely underestimated the American spirit. Economically, we still haven’t recovered completely, no one has, but physically and spiritually we, as a country, came back stronger than ever, with renewed patriotism. One bad effect from the 9/11 attacks were stereotyping. Many people have stereotyped all muslims as terrorist and this is one of the most long lasting effects. Many muslims have to go through everyday life with being called cruel names like terrorist, when they have nothing to with the attacks on September 11th. The real people to blame are the ones involved with Al-Qaida and their leader, Osama bin Laden. Not only was there a bad effect on the US, but he presented his own religion to uneducated people, as religion filled with hate, when this is not the case. In conclusion, Osama bin Laden, in the end, didn’t only contribute something bad to our society, but he contributed something bad to his own society

Circa 1973 UBL lived a much westernized lifestyle in Beirut going to night clubs, drinking and often embroiled in shouting matches resulting in the occasional fist fight. The al-Qaeda of today is a vastly different entity from the al-Qaeda formed by Osama bin Laden towards the end of the Afghan war against the Soviets in 1988 (Alexander and Swetnam, 2001: 37). The evolution, or as Burton (2006) has termed it “devolution”, of al-Qaeda, is partially linked to its terrorist acts, and, in particular, the counter-terrorist measures employed by governments to deal with them. This is most evident in reference to the single most expensive, in terms of life lost and economical impact, terrorist act in modern history, the destruction of the World Trade Centre, and the subsequent declaration of a “war on terror” by George Bush’s United States and its Allies. It is the actions in response to terrorist acts that has propagated these dynamic changes in the tactics and techniques used by al-Qaeda. This adaptation has seen the ideologies of al-Qaeda survive, despite constraints being placed on its operations. It has also ensured the continued jihad against the near enemy of apostate Islamic governments in the Middle East, and the far enemy of the United States and its Allies (Hoffman, 2004: 553) to further pursue its goal to establish a Caliphate muslim state governed by the Sharia (Alexander and Swetnam, 2001).…
