Oscar Romero: The Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is always present, guiding humanity in its most difficult times. One way in which this is done is through the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, which help us live out the Gospel in our lives. Oscar Romero, who was an archbishop in El Salvador, exemplifies the Holy Spirit working through humanity. Romero was a constant advocate for all, and everything he did was through the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The gifts of fortitude, understanding, and piety were the main gifts of the Holy Spirit that I saw exemplified through the life of Oscar Romero. Fortitude, or courage, is probably the most obvious gift that Romero exemplified, but it is by no means an unimportant one. Romero knew that it was dangerous to stand up for what was right, and
Though Romero was not necessarily poor or endangered by the bloody chaos going on around him, he saw what it was doing to God's people and realized that something had to be done. Romero saw that innocent people were being killed or kidnapped and he could not just sit by and let it happen. He understood the awful situation that so many people were going through and did his best to help them. Romero constantly stood up for the people of El Salvador not because it would benefit him, but because he saw the disgrace and understood that change needed to happen. Romero was very courageous in dangerous situations, and he often put himself at risk to help others, even when it may have been scary. He empathized with the people of El Salvador and viewed issues from their point of view to help achieve justice. Romero also showed respect for the poor people and the wealthy people, even though many of the wealthy people could be seen as enemies. Even though Romero didn't get to finish his mission and relieve the El Salvadorian people of their suffering, he used the gifts of the holy Spirit to help him make a change and spark a desire for justice.
