ignored by a group of people or an individual, being casted out of society or feeling like no one notices you. Lynn Stuart Parramore says “ It's the feeling of being pariah, of being shunned, ignored by the group, or given the silent treatment.”Article #1 pg (1) Lynn's point is that ostracism is a very serious matter. Lynn's definition of ostracism is very accurate and very descriptive and points out it is not bullying. It has become common today to dismiss social ostracism because people see it as “part of life.” But in reality it's a serious matter that affects so many people.
You may still be skeptical on how ostracism and bullying are different and there is a huge difference.
Ostracism is the feeling or being ignored .Bullying is receiving negative, unasked for attention. But just because you are being bullied that doesn't mean you can't feel ostracized.“From social ostracism exclusion on the playground to ignored in the workplace, ostracism is among the most devastating experiences we can endure, deeply connected to our most fundamental human need to be recognized and accepted.”- Article 1 pg (1) I agree with Parramore that it can happen to anyone, anywhere, any age. But I think there are more devastating things that can happen to a person and we just need to push through ostracism and maybe find help even if it’s hard and you keep getting shut down getting help is better than dealing with it on your own. Becuase being on your own can lead to terrible things such as violence towards yourself or others. You may be thinking it can't be that bad right? Wrong it causes a lot of pain towards the individual that's like being treated like you are dead to them and that is one of the most devastating feeling a person can feel. Many people wonder if i'm being treated like i don't exist why am i still alive and have negative thoughts and violent
thoughts. Hannah felt ostracized while being bullied, Hannah was definitely being bullied there is no question about that but even though she was getting attention she felt alone she felt ostracized. The whole book was based on Hannah being bullied she was always being bullied from rumors to name calling such as a slut, whore, etc. to getting punched/scratched over a boy playing them against each other there wasn't ever a part where Hannah wasn't being bullied. She started shutting down and felt ostracized. So she made her final decision and took her life.”Hannah Baker is not, and never was a slut, which begs the question what have you heard?” - 13 Reasons Why pg (23)
Ostracism is very serious and can lead to violent thoughts and lead to very very bad things such as hurting you or others. “You were touching me but i was using you. I needed you so i could let go of myself completely.”- 13 Reasons Why pg (265) Of course many will probably disagree on the grounds that Hannah could have gotten help and she is overreacting. But I would certainly take her issue a different way because she did reach out for help. She went to her guidance counselor and he told her she should just drop it. But is my proposal realistic? What are the chances of it being adopted? Although I believe that Hannah did get help i still think she could've have tried a couple more places to ask for help. Although ostracism may seem trivial it is in fact crucial in terms today. From people at school to friends to loved ones it most likely affects a lot of people around you. You may not be able to notice but just because you don't see it doesn't mean it's not there. You may think “they were just being dramatic” but you don't understand how they feel till you feel it yourself. And at times such as an ostracized person hurting themselves it affects the people that were close to them if that person decides to kill themselves their friends and family will be devastated and can affect them in a bad way. Or a person hurting others such as a shooter the people many people they kill affect all those people's family and friends. At first glance, teenagers might say ostracism can't be that bad. But on a closer inspection they can see it affects millions of people all around the world and even the people that are close to them.
