Othello Comparison
William Shakespeare’s play Othello is one of his four most great tragedies. This play is “widely known as being one of the most moving and most painful with the fall of proud, dignified man, the murder of a graceful, loving woman, and the unreasoning hatred of a "motiveless" villain”. Othello is an esteemed general respected and honoured for his position despite the fact he is a moor. After promoting the Florentine Cassio, his “friend” Iago despises Othello’s decision as he believes it should’ve been him who deserved it. Othello later elopes with Desdemona, which was looked down upon due to Othello being a black man. This is where Iago, the protagonist, begins his malicious plan to bring down Othello. The movie "O" shows a great deal of parallels to the book. Director Tim Blake Nelson stayed true to Shakespeare's original cast, plot, and sequence of events, but he set his movie in modern times. It takes place in a primarily white high school where Odin, playing the part of Othello, is a basketball star who leads his team to many victories. His right-hand-man, Michel (playing Cassio) is always there for him, helping in any way he can. Hugo plays the part of Iago. He shows a lot of jealousy towards Odin and Desi (playing Desdemona) being in a relationship as well as all of Odin's skills.

Iago only needs to convince Othello that Desdemona hates him because of his color. Iago, in a way, must rationalize and naturalize his own fictions as truths in order to get Othello to believe him. He cannot succeed in causing Othello's jealousy unless he believes them, to some degree, himself. "The most unsettling thing about Iago [...] is his unblushing separation of being from seeming" (McEachern, 195). Although the reader never finds out what happens to Iago at the end of the play, it is assumed that he gets executed for his treason and lies. All of the energy he used trying to fight Othello, eventually caused his own destruction. Jealousy is destructive weather it is internal, like Iago's racism, or external like Iago's sly hints to Othello about Desdemona's

In 1603, William Shakespeare wrote a tragedy called Othello about a Spanish moor that ultimately fell victim to his own skepticism and emotions and murders his wife due to the machinations of his ancient, Iago. Iago is the most interesting character in this Shakespearean play and in fact, has more speaking parts than even Othello himself. A man that can even convince his own wife to help with his masterfully manipulated puppetry of Othello, Desdemona, Roderigo, Cassio, and Emilia is an exquisite character. This villain seemed to have no real motive for his actions, but the enjoyment of the trouble he caused and the fact that Othello passed him over for his lieutenant. Although, Iago seems to quite, passionately want Othello’s affections, whether…

Othello, the play's protagonist, is the most dynamic character of them all due to the fact that he is a complete foil of himself by the final act of the play. In the second act Othello is introduced as confident, esteemed general of the Venetian army and a “valiant Moor,” (1.3), but by the end of the play he becomes overcome with insecurity and jealousy because of the rumors fed to him by his general. Throughout the play the audience witnesses the subtle shift in Othello’s feelings toward his wife, Desdemona, and his former lieutenant, Cassio. Othello’s suspicion soon drives him to insanity because he cannot figure out what the truth is. He says “I had been happy, if the general camp, Pioners and all, had tasted her sweet body, So I had nothing known.”(3.3) exclaiming how he would rather Desdemona sleep with the entire army without him knowing than being uncertain of her rumored affair with Cassio. The lie that Iago tells Othello ruins the Moor’s life. Othello goes from a respected commanding officer to an emotionally distraught killer. Iago had made the Moor a mirror image of himself.…

‘Othello is one of the brilliant plays written by William Shakespeare. It is the story of man named Othello and how his mind was twisted and manipulated by a man named Iago and how Iago made Othello think that his wife Desdemona was cheating on him with his lieutenant Michael Cassio, which results in many deaths. Tim Blake Nelson has creatively restructured ‘Othello’ into a film to appeal to a teenage audience. It still contains the same central ideas which are racism, jealousy and deception which will be analysed on how they are portrayed in ‘Othello’ and are creatively reshaped in ‘O’.…

Throughout Hollywood history, many screen adaptations of famous books and novels have strayed away from its original. In almost every movie based on a literary work, there are always major differences. Whether it is in the story plot, character, or even its setting, spotting the differences is always easy to find. However, when it comes to Shakespeare the movies are rarely changed. In most movies, they are not only true to the plot, but even true to the dialogue. In perhaps one of Shakespeare’s most famous tragedies Othello, he tells the story of a great warrior, when convinced by an evil friend, becomes enraged with jealousy, and commits murder. This, in my opinion, is an example of a great tragedy. It has all the elements, a great love story being destroyed, by the main characters own madness. To the point when Othello imagines the affair, he becomes epileptic. In one of Othello’s cinematic renderings, we have come to find that the movie, unlike, others have stayed true to the play. In Oliver Parker’s 1995 film “Othello” he made sure that his movie, maintained the story plot, character plot, and even the characters, from the original play. This movie was even the first to feature a black actor to play a black Othello. However, like every other movie, this one does make a few minor changes to the plot, but all in all is one with the original play.…

My interest in Othello is drawn to the way that race and colour is presented. Shakespeare was revolutionary in his casting of a black man to be the tragic hero and a white man to be the villain. In Jacobean society and even in many societies tody, the audience would of expected to see a black man as the felon. The setting in Cyprus is dramatically significant as it is isolated in the wild frontiers of war. Away from the structured society of Venice social norms and hierarchy are not relevant allowing Shakespeare to place a Moor in a position of authority. This daring theme of a black man in power has remained controversial ever since and it wasn’t until 1833 that a black man actually played the part. The issue of mixed race relationships was especially an issue in segregated America up until the twentieth century with Othello being played with blackface till 1940. The unnatural war setting also enables Iago’s passion to be unmasked,…

In my opinion on the movie O and that it related to the play Othello because there were many differences but all the end it did seem like an Othello ending. Like for example in the play they used swords and knives in the movie used guns. Plus, there was a war going on in the play but in O it was just a basketball. But both stories are still similar because both Odin and Othello both have anger and jealously. This movie was good because it did show Othello in a different way, but the characters were still the same, but the timeline and setting was different.…

There are many concepts and themes presented in Othello, the most memorable of which would definitely be the strange idea that someone could be led to kill the person the love the most, as readers are throughout the play searching for why this comes about and where to lay the blame. Shakespeare uses many different dramatic techniques to show that Othello is in fact the victim of racism, pushed over the edge by Iago’s extreme hatred. He also reveals through the play the discriminatory nature of society at the time and shows that Othello was constantly made to feel an outsider. Othello’s constant exposure to this racism and discrimination lead him to be susceptible to distrust and to feel that Desdemona is 'too good for him', and so when he also becomes the target of Iago’s directed hatred he is a helpless victim. Techniques such as Character, Symbolism, Irony, Conflict and Tragedy all reveal this idea of Othello as a victim.…
