Othello was written by William Shakespeare and was first printed in 1662 Othello tells the tragic story of Othello, a prestigious general in Venice; Iago is his best friend, however, when Othello promotes someone else to be personal lieutenant, Iago becomes jealous and begins plotting against Othello and his newly eloped wife, Desdemona. Othello is suspicious of Desdemona and plans to poison her. Othello smothers her to death. Emilia, Iago’s wife, tells Othello about Iago’s plots so Othello hurts Iago and kills himself while Iago kills Emilia. Othello is originally set in Venice, but moves later to Cyprus. Because Othello is set during the war between Venice and Turkey, the time period of it is the late 16th century. The protagonist of Othello is Othello while the antagonist is Iago. Othello conveys the theme that often people let others tell them how to view others. Othello is convinced by Iago that Desdemona is unfaithful to their marriage. Without even knowing the reality of the situation, Othello kills Desdemona. In Othello, people lie successfully to other characters. This causes death and distrust while breaking up three relationships, Iago and Emilia’s, Desdemona and Othello’s, and Othello and Iago’s. William Shakespeare conveys the truth of humankind beautifully in Othello. This is the plays largest strength. Shakespeare writes about human desire. Iago wants Othello to promote him and when he doesn’t he feels the need to exact revenge on him. Othello is convinced that Desdemona is being unfaithful, so he kills her. Emilia is distrustful of her husband, so she betrays him by telling Othello of his schemes. Othello depicts human reactions and relationships masterfully. However, I thought that the conflict between Turkey and Venice was difficult to keep track of while focusing on the character dynamics. The story of Othello was told effectively because of all of the character dynamics. Despite that fact that this play isn’t particularly concise or easy to decipher, Shakespeare keeps the audience captivated with all of the character relationships. The audience must keep track of all these relationships to understand the play. All of the characters are so perfectly portrayed in Shakespeare words so the audience is drawn in more and more throughout the course of the play. I liked this play because of the characters. Each character is different and Shakespeare did a phenomenal job of clearly outlining their objectives. While reading Othello, I felt that I really knew who these people were and I could decide whether to like them or hate them. I think that this kept me interested in the play more than anything else. Othello also explained relationship and human desire beautifully. Overall, Othello captivated the audience by using character development to propel it’s rich and fantastic story.

"Othello" and "O" tell the story of a great man who suffers terrible destruction as a result of external evil. "Othello" is a tale that weaves an intricate pattern of lies and deceit, beginning with the main character, Othello, being questioned by Brabanzio, the father of his new wife Desdemona who Othello had just married in secret. Brabanzio is not happy with this as not only is Othello a middle-aged man while Desdemona a young women, but Othello is a Moor, (a black man) and the thought of a white women marrying a black man was looked down upon, despite that fact that Othello was a prized general and diplomat, the pride of Venice. Iago, a man Othello trusts is secretly extremely jealous of Othello's happiness, and plotting his downfall behind his back, with the help of Roderigo who is very much in love with Desdemona, but is only a source of money for Iago. At Othello's orders, Iago is told to make sure Cassio is dead, and with the help of willing Roderigo who dies as well, Cassio is killed. Desdemona is confiding her unhappiness in her friend Emilia, who is Iago's wife. When Othello comes to Desdemona's bedroom he strangles her, believing Iago's tales of lies out to destroy him. The first Act of the play takes place in Venice. This is where we see Othello at his most innocent and care free, having just married the love of his life and have not fallen into the trap that cunning Iago plans to weave. Othello is a black African prince living in a European, colour prejudiced society. Even in Venice, where Othello holds high rank in the Venetian military, differences such as the contrast in the way he speaks to the other Venetians and especially his colour difference affect Othello and start to plant the seed of insecurity and doubt in his mind, which Iago develops into a full blown jealousy. Having come from another country Othello doesn’t speak like the rest out the characters “Rude am I in my speech”, with this referring not to the harsh language he later develops from Iago, but from the changes in his tone and use of words compared to that of the Venetians. As…

“Othello, the Moor of Venice”, tells the tragic story of a noble hero that is undone by his own fatal flaw. Othello has a blinding trust in those closest to him, and he leads with his heart, not his mind. This fatal flaw is exploited by a supposedly loyal friend and Othello's trusting nature and inability to separate what is in his heart and what is in his mind dramatically results in tragedy. With a running theme of perception versus reality, Othello's refusal to accept the difference between them foreshadows the tragic ending. The play begins with Othello's Ensign, Iago, hatching a plot to destroy the life of Othello and he has recruited Roderigo to help him carry out his devious plan. Iago has everyone fooled into thinking he is of noble loyalty to Othello further supporting the perception vs. reality theme. The reality is that without this belief, he would have been unable to dupe Othello, with these lines “Were I the Moor, I would not be Iago” and “I am not what I am”(59-60). He hates Othello for not being promoted to Lieutenant, a position he felt he earned. Iago's first act of deceit is an attempt to deny the validity of Othello and Desdemona, who recently eloped and to plant the seeds of doubt by having Roderigo tell Senator Brabantio that his daughter Desdemona has eloped with Othello. The Duke believes that Othello has bewitched Desdemona with magic. Desdemona and Othello deny the claims, and she openly declares her love for Othello. The perception versus reality theme is fully explored here. The perception, instigated by Iago, is that the marriage is a sham since the courtship was brief but the reality is that Othello and Desdemona truly love each other and feel they belong together. The Duke sums up the theme very well with “When remedies are past, the griefs are ended/By seeing the worst, which late on hopes depended”(202-203); if you can't change something, don't cry about it. When you…

One of William Shakespeare’s many attributes as a playwright of the late 16th century was his character development. Shakespeare’s seamless use of indirect characterization sets his works apart from the other playwrights and authors of his time. In Othello, the Shakespearian tragedy about the newlywed Othello and Desdemona, Shakespeare uses character foils to emphasize the strengths and weaknesses of the characters. By making inwardly similar characters seem like polar opposites, Shakespeare truly shows how dynamic each of the characters is.…

The colonization of America brought about many new ways of life: new living conditions, new skills to be learned, and new land to explore and settle. Relations with the natives provided food and basic skill sets, and it also paved the way for new colonists arriving in such a foreign land. However, life for colonists coming to settle America was no vacation. Depending on your family’s background and where you decided to settle, daily life was an adventure. In Virginia, rapscallions, who had never worked a day in their life, squandered their days drinking and gambling. New Hampshire set up actual town squares; churches, schools, town halls. Soon enough, however, a similar theme started to become more and more apparent as well as more and more concerning. Alcohol and excessive drinking became extremely prevalent in early Americans’ lives. There are many factors that led to such alcoholism, and many factors that led into the increasing numbers of Americans to embrace temperance. Taverns were believed, by the lower classes, to be nurseries of freedom. By the upper classes, they were believed to be seedbeds for rowdy, drunk, and subordinate colonists. Again, due to many factors, alcoholism witnessed an excessive peak as well as harsh opposition from temperance groups.…

The fate of Othello is typical of a Shakespearian play. Shakespeare often builds up his main characters, by calling them ‘valiant' and ‘noble' and relating all his great military achievements in the case of Othello, and then by dragging them off their elated positions by soiling them with such petty emotions as hate or jealousy. ‘Othello' itself is a play of strong opposites. Anger and love and the constant imagery of heaven and hell, Othello being the ‘devil' and Desdemona the ‘angel'.…
