Our Stars Book Comparison
The Fault in Our Stars: Book & Movie Comparison
The Fault in Our Stars is a well written book. After I read the book I watched the movie and I noticed some major differences. Some important scenes that were in the book were not in the movie. The book also has more details which is missing in the movie, making some scenes, such as Augustus’ death less dramatic and emotional.
One important difference would be Kaitlyn, Hazel's best friend from “pre-cancer” life. Kaitlyn isn't mentioned at all in the movie, so we don't know much about Hazel’s life before she had cancer. In the book Kaitlyn and Hazel meet up at the mall and go shopping like they used to. This showed some of Hazel’s history so we know more about her past. Hazel realizes that some

This affects Hazel because she keeps comparing herself to Caroline. Caroline died and the main thing people remembered of her was that she had cancer. This got Hazel thinking that when she dies she will be remembered only as the girl with cancer since she believes she is near death. Augustus’ foreshadowing was not in the movie. When he told Hazel his cancer came back it was surprising because Gus looked fine until the scene in Amsterdam where he tells her. In the book Hazel picks up Gus from his house and overhears his mom yelling at him for leaving which foreshadows that his cancer is back. When he told Hazel his cancer was back in the book it wasn't so abrupt unlike the movie. In the movie Augustus picks up Hazel and Mrs. Lancaster in a limousine like nothing happened Another significant thing that was left out in the movie was when Augustus’ cancer had returned and he was getting sick. They did show Augustus getting his cancer back but did not mention how much Hazel helped clean after him and take care of him like they did in the book. In the movie Gus and Hazel meet up at the skeleton maze and Gus looks very ill. The next night Hazel gets a call in the middle of the night from Augustus saying he's at the gas station and he’s not feeling well. Hazel finds him and called the police and they go to the hospital in an

Hazel & Gus are wonderful characters that had a physical attraction that quickly turned into a strong friendship. Having experienced or in Hazels case still experiencing the hardships of a cancer diagnosis and not knowing when her illness will progress would be a very stressful way to live each day. From the book I believe they both are doing their best to deal with their diagnosis but wish for a healthier, normal life.…

From the very beginning the author shows how confident Hazel is. Hazel sticks up for her brother. In the story it says, “... and the next word out of anyone and i'll be their mother to.” This line shows that Hazel, is confident, because to speak up to someone like that you have to have courage and confidence to show people who is boss. Hazel is great at that.…

The number one thing I noticed in the movie that was different in the book is that Carine (his sister) tells the entire story. During the book though, the narrator position changes between interviewers and people he met. I think that by having Carine tell the story, the movie was a little more understandable. The book was a little complex because it is hard to determine who is telling the story.…

First and foremost, there are many similarities and differences between the two stories. My first example is when Ransom died in the novel. In the movie, they portray Ransom as about to be thrown over, although they never end up doing it. He then fights against Davie and Alan, and yet still never seems to die. In the book, he is killed by Mr. Shuan, the cause being that he brought him a dirty pannikin. Another example when Alexander dies. Even though the novel and movie both indicate Alexander dying, they died in very different ways. Another difference between the two is when they go visit Cluny and Alan gambles. Both contain this scene, although it goes down very differently. In this scene in the movie, it shows Alan approaching Davie when he is asleep, rather than the book where it claims Davie was sick. And lastly, one similarity is when Davie and Alan approach the village of James of Glen, and find that the Long Mile Gang is after them and the village is going to be ransacked. I feel…

One thing in particular that the book does much better is making use of complex metaphors and themes, such as: the river for life, and oneness with nature, that string themselves together as you turn each page of the book, while in the movie the metaphors and symbolism are represented in a much different way through picture. In the book, both themes regarding the river are very vivid and clear, as they use strong imagery of nature to draw pictures in the minds of the readers. In the movie both themes are represented and referred to much less because of the lack of narration.…

The book was better because it made my thinking cool and the movie was good but it wasn't how I expected it to be the way I wanted it to be it was the book a wrinkle in time. In the book Meg has glasses and braces and in the 2003 movie she does not have glasses and braces in the beginning of the book it was a stormy and dark night and in the movie it started at the school and later on in the movie it took place in and dark and storming night. The movie and the book they go to the same place in the same time at the book they have no computers and internet and in the movie there was computers and internet. The camazots in the books was colorful and bright and in the movie camazots was grey and depressing.…

In addition to the book being written differently than the movie, there are many things that were left out of the movie that were in the book. One thing that was in the book but not the movie was when Charlie caught his sister Candace and her boyfriend, Ponytail Derek sleeping together. In the movie they also leave the part out when Charlie drives Candace to get an abortion. Charlie, Sam and Patrick also smoke cigarettes in the book, but they don’t in the movie. One big thing that Charlie did a lot of in the book, but almost none of in the movie was cry. In the book, Charlie cries after he and Sean get in a fight, when Sam kisses him, when he breaks up the fight between Patrick and Brad, and after the dare where…

    Fault In Our Stars Theme

Hazel told Augustus about how death is separating her from her family and she’s scared to talk about death, since every time they discuss about the topic of death, her parents seem to be extremely worried and gloomy. “I could feel everyone watching us, wondering what was wrong with us, and whether it would kill us, and how heroic my mom must be, and everything else. That was the worst part about having cancer, sometimes: The physical evidence of disease separates you from other people.” (Grace 2014 – Page 144). This quotes explains hazels fear of death because she states about how she can feel everyone wondering about her, caring for her, specially her parents and since she doesn’t want anyone to be close to her, she’s getting separated from everyone. She doesn’t have a way out of this problem. For her, that’s the worst part about having cancer, and how her parents would think she’s depressed but in reality she is not. By a physical evidence, hazel means that her parents and her other relatives believe that she’s in depression and that starts separating her from them because she likes to be left…

The Fault in Our Stars does contain all of the above topics in the book, but it is also teaching a lesson. Portraying that you can still be in love with someone that is fighting for their life. This, and more, without a stop, make this book fall into the banned and challenged books all around the world, but this should not happen. John Green spent time on this novel. Telling a story about a teenage girl and boy that fall in love. Like said before, it should not bolt to the blue. It does come to a love scene, just like any other young-adult tale. Warning labels on books like this should be placed on the book, notifying and visible for parents to see and discuss if they want their children to read these books. Another process that can revise this book could be to remove the scenes that could be harmful to our grade. This selection should not be banned, instead, there should be actions taken to have it stay put in libraries and the world…
