Comparing Davie And The Kidnapped Novel
“Davie lad, I love ye like a brother,” Alan Breck states to David Balfour in the Kidnapped novel.
I am writing this to show that the movie and the novel were very different. In the book it opens with Davie’s father, Alexander, already dead. In the movie, it opens with Davie’s father still alive, just caught under a branch. Overall, I feel that the Kidnapped novel was better than the movie in every way.
First and foremost, there are many similarities and differences between the two stories. My first example is when Ransom died in the novel. In the movie, they portray Ransom as about to be thrown over, although they never end up doing it. He then fights against Davie and Alan, and yet still never seems to die. In the book, he is killed by Mr. Shuan, the cause being that he brought him a dirty pannikin. Another example when Alexander dies. Even though the novel and movie both indicate Alexander dying, they died in very different ways. Another difference between the two is when they go visit Cluny and Alan gambles. Both contain this scene, although it goes down very differently. In this scene in the movie, it shows Alan approaching Davie when he is asleep, rather than the book where it claims Davie was sick. And lastly, one similarity is when Davie and Alan approach the village of James of Glen, and find that the Long Mile Gang is after them and the village is going to be ransacked. The novel was far more detailed and the eloquence of the author came into play, rather than the movie where it is different lines. So, hopefully you now have a deeper understanding of the difference between the book and the movie, and fully understand the similarities and differences between the two. After a deep analysis, the book still appears better than it’s movie counterpart, just like most other book/movie
