The first reason disabled people should participate in regular school activities is they also have a brain. This is shown in the book when Melody said that her body doesn’t work but her mind does. This is also shown when Melody went to
a doctor to see how smart she was; he told her mother that Melody was mentally retarded just because she couldn’t express herself to the doctor. Second, disabled people are just as smart as regular people. An example of this in the book is when Melody received a one hundred percent on both quiz team tests, which shows that she is as smart as anyone. Third, they will have the opportunity to feel normal like any other kid. This is expressed when Melody felt like a normal kid when she moving from class to class and not just staying in room H-5. Finally, regular kids will benefit from the diversity in the classroom. This is shown in the book when inclusion classes were started. The music teacher paired up a disabled kid with a regular kid.
All of these examples from Out of My Mind show that disabled people should have the same opportunity and should be able to participate in regular school activities.
