Out of my mind is a very interesting novel by Sharon M Draper, the book was published in 2010 by the Athenaeum book for young readers, the recommended age for this novel would be for 10 and up and I’m sure many adults would enjoy this book as well as young readers. This book is quite an easy read with only 295 pages.
The book starts with Melody Brooks an 11-year-old girl who suffers from cerebral palsy. It also talks about how she is surrounded by words that just get stored in her head as she is unable speak, walk and sadly she can’t dress herself, feed herself or even use the bathroom but her parents try and make her life as normal as possible. The only people who really believe that Melody took in every thing she heard or read and thought she really smart was her Mum, Dad and Mrs V her next door neighbour. …show more content…
Melody’s Life got better when she started grade 5 of her public school, there were new rules which meant Melody could go into classes with the so-called “normal “children and interact with them.
Of course some people didn’t like the idea of that especially the two girls called Claire and Molly who were very unhappy about Melody and the others in their classes. Just when Melody thought her life was going good it got even better! She got a helper called Catharine who escorted her to and from her inclusion program classes. A few weeks before Christmas Melody pointed to the computer that Rose had and pointed her finger back to herself, Catharine under stood that Melody wanted a computer so that she could communicate instead of taping on her vocab board which was attached to her wheelchair. Over the next couple of weeks, Melody and Catharine looked into computers
until the found they perfect one for Melody’s needs. It was called the medi talker which meant Melody would finally able to speak (well other than some noises she could make with her mouth) for the first time in 11 years she was able to actually talk to her peers in her classes and express all of those words that have been stuck in her head with no escape.
Throughout this novel many conversations between Melody and others made me feel sorry for her in a way as many people treat her badly because of the way she looks, but it has made me understand the way she feels and why she feels that way. Melody although she has cerebral palsy is a very intelligent girl who is also kind, loving and a caring person. There are a number of themes in this novel which include happiness, sadness, love and anger and what it means to live the life of 11-year-old Melody Brooks.
This book made me feel really sorry and sad for the main character Melody Brooks but grateful for what I have and to never take life for granted. I think reading this book will make everybody appreciate there lives more. Overall I really enjoyed this novel as it was set out really well and I think it gave a powerful image to society. I would recommend this novel as its great read that really gets you thinking and comparing aspects of life. One negative about the novel is that I didn’t like the way Melody was treated throughout the book by some of the teachers and peers. I understand that the author is supposed to make you like and dislike characters but to me when I read a book I get in to character and become that person. I really think in the novel and in real life that people like Melody are treated poorly and I don’t think its right for them to be treated that way just because their seen as different. Overall it was a great novel to read and like I said I would recommend and read it again.
