Outdoor Ed: A Short Story
I hesitated when I stepped on the bus on Monday that morning. I was so thrilled, eager, and afraid at the same time because it was the day that the whole sixth grade goes to outdoor Ed, but I have also been waiting for this day. When I went on the bus I sat on a seat beside Rachel. I looked around the bus and everyone seemed to be so thrilled, but I didn’t see anyone else afraid about the trip.

I began to feel nervous, I felt like I was going to throw up and I wasn’t feeling too great. I have never been away from my mom for a whole week. I was a little excited when everyone was talking about how wonderful it’s going to be there at outdoor ED and how when there siblings been there before and they have told them how cool it’s going to be. Rachel and I played a lot of games like a ghost and I spy. It was really entertaining when we were playing games, but only because it’s got everything off my mind. I liked looking outside and looking at cool stuff that the bus had passed by on the way there. I slept on the bus for a little bit, but then Mr Engle woke me up because he wanted to take a picture of Taylor, Rachel, and I but then I fell back to sleep. I also read a little bit of my book, but it wasn’t interesting, so I fell back to sleep again because I was really tired..

We said bye to everyone that was there at outdoor Ed. I was going to miss them, but then I was so excited to go home and tell my family all about it. I also was going to go to the school website and see all of the pictures that have been posted there about us while we were in outdoor Ed. The bus ride was fun and this time I wasn’t nervous. I also didn't sleep or read this time I played games with Taylor and Rachel. I think I was just worrying too much and it turned out to be just right! Maybe even the best week of my whole entire

I had only gotten six hours of sleep. I didn’t want to get up but today is the day that I get to explore Chicago with my friends! Even though I felt exhausted I pushed myself up and got ready. I didn’t know whether to expect it to be warm like the last few days have been or if it would be cold, so I dressed for both. I pulled my sneakers on and collected my little bag full of snacks and essentials for walking around all day. Getting to school I go sit with my friends outside the gym as we anxiously wait for the bell to ring. We came up with our plan of where we wanted to go as we munched on our little breakfast.…

I lace up my walking shoes and head outdoors in my neighborhood. I enjoy being outdoors looking at the trees, neighbors' plants and flowers, ducks swimming in the creek, and squirrels scurrying up the trees. Just being outdoors, helps me forget what is bothering me. Saying "Hello" to other walkers make me smile. When I arrive home from my walk, I feel refreshed and I have a feeling I can tackle…

It was two in the morning. I got out of bed, running on three hours of sleep. I ran downstairs after getting ready for a long bus ride. I saw my mom and grandpa waiting downstairs, as my grandpa was going on the trip with me. When at the school, teachers checked our bags, kind of like the airport. After this check, we were off (well, about an hour later). Now it was off on our new home for the next 12 hours. For the first three hours, everyone slept. It was boring and I will skip that. We then pulled over for our breakfast stop. When we stopped, the teachers passed out our boxes of bagels. We proceeded to get back on the road next, which was a rather long time. About four hours of driving through Ohio farms and Pennsylvania hills,…

Everything was loud. The overstuffed bus of children was leaving the school parking lot for its normal route of sudden stops, unforgiving bumps, and of course, transporting students to their destinations. Opposite from every other child on the bus, I sit quietly in seat fourteen listening to the screaming laughter and shrill excitement of the conclusion of another school year. I sit there in silence because I knew that it would be my last bus ride home. I was trying to take everything in: the smell of the old brown bus seats, the half opened windows that tried to keep us cool, the pleasantly plump and incredibly sweet bus driver, and the jovial and rambunctious sounds of kids cackling and yelping. At every stop, I could literally feel my heart drop a little. As the bus neared my neighborhood, my mouth was completely dry. When I saw my house, my heart stopped. There was the moving truck. It was symbol of my leaving home, and the realization that the move was going to happen, and that I had no control over it.…

The outdoors has been an integral part of who I am, allowing me to connect deeply with my dad and to forge a new bond with my sister. Growing up with amazing access to the wilderness, I’ve been on countess hikes and climbs with my family and have found a sense of freedom, independence, and physical and inner strength in myself as I have made challenging ascents and endured conditions that have tested my mettle. I have spent much of my free time in high school working with POST 84 Outdoor Education, teaching others the wonders of the wilderness has helped me to fall in love with the outdoors even more. Yet on various college tours, asking admission staff about their school’s outdoor program has been my most dreaded question because all too often the response is a disappointing “Well, I think there are…

It had been a crazy morning as I ran all over my house trying to find my jacket and boots. My mom had been admitted into the hospital that morning for a massive headache and all I could think about was whether or not she would be okay. I took her to the emergency room that day before so going to class was the last thing on my mind. My father and sister had agreed to stay with her till I ended class so I was more at ease knowing she wouldn’t be alone. After running all over my house looking for my things I quickly gathered myself to make my train. I finally got to Penn Station with four minutes to spare. I quickly walked to where the rest of my class was as we waited for instructions to where we would…

    What Is Outdoor Education?

Around Australia, outdoor education exists within the broader education perspective (Bucknell, 2006). It is not compulsory for students in some schools to embark on an outdoor experience and when a group of secondary students do step of the bus, issues in the forefront of their mind would most likely consist of “how will I cope with going to the toilet in the bush?” or “I’m glad I am sharing a tent with my best friend” (Dickson, Gray & Hayllar, 2005). In its most broadest sense outdoor education is education in, about and for the out of doors (Donaldson & Donaldson, 1958 p.65.). To be more specific according to Moscardo (2008), outdoor education can be seen as educational activities focused on understanding relationships between humans and their environments, improving physical health and recreational skills, teamwork and personal growth and development. Throughout this paper I will continue to dissect what outdoor education means and what makes a successful outdoor educator.…

Later throughout the day, I finally saw some of my friends and felt more comfortable that there were people I knew. I was starting to enjoy my classes, and I got to know my teachers a little more, but now it was 5th period lunch and Man was I hungry! When I walked into the lunchroom, I stopped in bewilderment on where to go; there were swarms of people everywhere I turned, freshman, sophomores, juniors, and even seniors. There was a snack line, soda machines, and an abundance of tables that filled the cafeteria. You could even sit outside! It was a humongous difference from middle school; we have so much more freedom.…
