It’s important to know how power is spread out in a country:the people/organizations who hold power, their opinions and beliefs affects what they do for and to society
The government creates laws and policies that affect its people;it’s hard to tell based off of what activities the government chooses to do who is governing (and vise versa)
There is a connection between power and purpose

Our Founding Fathers were worried that a direct democracy would lead foolish votes due to passion and/or popular opinion that people held people vote and give representatives power. These representatives then compete and the winner makes decisions for the people.
Con: takes a long time & information for representatives decide on vote/decision
Pro: Representatives more likely to choose & vote reasonably

In order to function, there must be opportunities for possible leader to compete with each other (campaign) and that communication (speeches, hold press meetings) is free. Voters must also believe that they have good (and enough) choices.
Some struggles: finding how many representatives, how many elections, number of candidates, funding for races (U.S. funds by groups such as unions, industry, private)
A few believe that direct democracy can be achieved: appears in the form of propositions, neighborhood committees
