At the beginning of the novel, Ponyboy resents Darry for being too strict and always bothering him for not using his head. He recognizes the sacrifices that Darry has made to raise his two little brothers, but still thinks Darry just doesn't care for him at all. “ Although, he has gone through a lot in his 20 years, grown up to fast.” (Ponyboy 2) Ponyboy believes that Darry loves Soda much more than him and would like it better off if Pony wasn’t there at all. “Darry thought I was just another mouth to feed and somebody to holler at.” (Ponyboy, 18) When Darry hit Ponyboy, Pony thought that Darry didn’t want him around and that it was better for him to just leave. “It was plain to me that Darry didn’t want me around. And I wouldn’t stay if he did.” (Ponyboy, 50)
The relationship between the brothers takes an emotional turn when Soda and Darry come to the hospital to visit Ponyboy after the fire. Ponyboy has a revelation. He sees his oldest brother cry for the first time in years and realizes that "Darry did care about me, maybe as much as he cared about Soda, and because he cared he was trying too hard to make something of me." (Ponyboy, 98) He understands that after his parents dying in the accident, Darry is terrified of losing another person he loves.
