Statistics show that each year almost seven hundred fifty-thousand United States teen girls have experienced unintended pregnancies. Approximately half are because the girls were not using birth control pills. Birth control pills should be sold over the counter because it would lower the percentage of abortions, lower teen pregnancies, and even reduce the risk of ovarian cancer other medical issues and other menstrual pains. Birth control has been instrumental in lowering the number of abortions performed each year. 4.4 to 7.5 abortions per one thousand girls compared to 19.6 per one thousand has been cut by sixty two to seventy eight percent because of easier access to birth control pills.
