New immigrants faced several challenges upon moving to America in the 1800’s. These challenges include assimilation, exclusion, and overcrowding. Assimilation is the absorption of immigrants/outsiders into a certain culture. This essay will cover five different documents explaining the aforementioned points with sufficient evidence. Starting off: assimilation.…
Immigrants journeying to America by boat take in fresh air above deck. The vast majority of immigrants had to travel in the steerage class—dark, cramped below-deck quarters. The shipping companies that sold passengers steerage listed them as cargo on ship manifests. Many steerage passengers tried to escape the stifling conditions below deck by staying above deck…
The United States is a country built on immigration, both legal and illegal. One of the most influential groups in terms of immigration in America is the Latin American demographic. Latin Americans influence everything from their local economies, politics, culture and society in general. There are a number of arguments made both for and against continued immigration by Latinos, from the fact that all Americans are descended from immigrants to the fact that they provide needed labor in areas that many American citizens are less inclined to work in. The argument against immigration is that allowing Latin Americans in steals jobs from U.S. citizens, they contribute unduly to crime statistics or that they take advantage of social services reserved for legal Americans without paying the taxes that keep these programs in service. In this paper, I will present a brief history of Latin American immigration and present arguments both for and against continued movement into the United States. The close of the paper will be reserved for my opinion on what the best course of action would be to curtail the problems facing immigration in the United States.…
Instead, I will talk about more important matters. I have seen the many issues that the country is facing because of immigration. But, I have also began to see the effect that all these issues have on the immigrant people. It's difficult for immigrants to be able to express themselves when they come to this country, it also makes it harder for them when people judge them for their legal status. I’m not saying this because it's what I think, I’m saying it because it's what I have been through. When you come to America from a different country it's difficult to understand others and for others to understand you, and it's scary. In the news sometimes it is made to believe that the Hispanic community is bad, but is it really? People don't give the Hispanic community a chance to show the good in them. Instead, they automatically assume the worst and blame them. I strongly believe that if people were to give the Hispanics and every other foreigner a chance than they would be surprised to see that they are not so bad, that once you get to know them, they can show you the good in them. I remember that in 8th grade my English teacher asked the class “If you could change the world in any way, what would you…
I am currently a senior Political Science major, History minor, with a concentration in International Relations. I am also the chairman of the Howard University NAACP Political Action Committee. I am an academic, I am a student leader, but more importantly, I am a servant. It is my firm belief that the reason I was blessed to be given the opportunity to get a college education is so that I can use this privilege and knowledge to help others. Just recently in December I was fortunate enough to go on a service trip to South Africa with the YAALI program. There we did community service and connected with our brothers and sisters on the continent. This was a very impressionable experience for me, especially because it was my first time leaving…
We have our share of chores around our apartment all the times. James and I like to clean from beginning to end and ask question about what ought to be cleaned first. We make sure to answer each other questions and be sure to know if each other is meeting the other expectations. Together we give each other clear direction in how we want areas to be cleaned with complete and thorough explanation.…
Immigration is the process of foreigners settling into another country permanently for the purpose of employment, education, or any other purpose. Immigration has been an issue to United States for decades. The question whether Immigration in US is harmful to the country or not has been debated since ages and will be a subject of debate in future too. We have seen that being immigrant in US has helped many of the immigrants whereas on the other side it has been a leading cause of problems like depression, suicide etc. Being immigrant in US for someone means a lot of difficulties in terms of adapting to the foreign soil. An individual has to start a new life from ground zero regardless of his/her position in the previous countries. There is an only 5% chance that any individual can continue the career from where he/she dropped from the country of origin which brings a lot of depression among the immigrants. For most people, being amongst friends and relatives means a lot and gives happiness and relief to their lives. In this case nothing can be a substitute of the affection of relationships. Being immigrants, they have to stay thousands of miles apart and have to suffer this separation each and every day which leads to loneliness. This can also be a cause of depression for more than 70% immigrants according to a survey report. Big difference in the skills and education also sets the immigrants back from finding the right job at the start. Even though an immigrant has knowledge and skills from their previous homeland but due to the requirement of the US companies that the education and experience be from the US based companies, immigrants are finding harder to match the job with their skills. A lot of foreigners who move to US had first-class jobs in high positions before they were immigrants. When they reach US, it is now a different ball game. Some have hard times to find their match and thus, have to…
I personally find a great pleasure in volunteering for the program. I believe my own experience as an immigrant…
Being an undocumented student has lead me to the most amazing community of Dreamers! I can say without a doubt that many of my problems are because of my immigration status but today I understand that the most amazing gift I have been given is a tough life! It was that struggle that made me a leader because it made me love and fight, more importantly it gave me a purpose. A socially responsible leader is one who has a passion beyond herself. As a dreamer I have struggled and failed to many times to count but that to is a gift because now I have a story to share. A degree means more to me than a fancy car, it is knowledge, that will grant me power in the form of an echoing voice, to offer relief for the many lives that parallel my own. At this…
An immigrant faces many challenges in the new country they arrive in. Whether they chose go willingly to another country, or they do so because of necessity, the challenges do not decrease. The first challenge is to fit in and understand how anything works. Things such as the social norms, the expectations, and the civil regulations must be identified and adhered to. There is no one to help you initially, and you are thrust into the deep end with limited resources and limited knowledge. But the one thing that you do have is a drive, a motive. There is a clear reason for the immigrant to have left their country of origin, and a drive to accomplish something. This drive was evident in my parents, who came over from Pakistan under the pressure…
The persistent inflow of Hispanic immigrants threatens to divide the United States into two peoples, two cultures, and two languages. Unlike past immigrant groups, Mexicans and other Latinos have not assimilated into mainstream U.S. culture, forming instead their own political and linguistic enclaves—from Los Angeles to Miami—and rejecting the AngloProtestant values that built the American dream. The United States ignores this challenge at its peril.…
Many people today will argue that success should be measured by the amount of wealth or fame a person can have. The richer a person is, the more successful he/she will becomes to our eyes. An immigrant’s success is measure by the positive influence a person can have on other people's lives. On a relative, a friend, or a co-worker, an immigrant could influence the life of others just by showing the importance of things such as learning and speaking another language or bringing…
I was proudly born and raised in South Central Los Angeles. I am a first generation American as both of my parents are originally from El Salvador. I graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in political science. The reasons I want to attend law school are to better serve as a role model for my community and to seek justice on behalf of those denied it. I hope to prevent unjust deportations that separates immigrant families. Attending law is school means more than the fulfillment of my dreams or the redemption of my personal struggles, but rather it is a means to the change I desperately want to see. A personal fact about me is that as a freshman in college I decided to donate my hair for the first time and I recently donated my hair to Locks…
With rising questions about the immigration process in The United States. We need to implement new ideas and processes that allow for a more effective system. That not only make sure our country stays safe, but also to give these immigrants a chance to succeed. Not only through employment opportunities, but also through education. By providing some of these people with a trade. It would allow them to provide for their families, contribute to society, and help improve our economy.…
Immigration reform in the United States is still a hotly contentious policy issue among policymakers in Congress because there is no concrete solution on how to remedy this issue due to the varying conservative and liberal views on this complex matter. However, time and time again most policy discussions and research thus far have talked about the low-skilled undocumented workers and failed to address the issue of high- skilled foreign student here with US degrees and what they can do to allow this population to gain a path to permanent status here in the US. Over the years the U.S. has welcomed and trained thousands of high- skilled workers as foreign students with bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees but have stopped short of giving…
