In the article, "Should Everyone Go to College?" by Stephanie Owen and Isabel Sawhill, they clearly state that not everyone should go to college, and individuals who do go to college make more money. Both of the authors are part of The Center on Children and Families at Brookings Institution. Stephanie Owen is a senior research assistant while Isabel Sawhill is a senior in economic studies and co-director of the institution. This article was published May 18, 2013. Since they are both Senior of the institution they must be experienced in this type of work.…
I come from a very traditional nuclear Mexican family. The oldest of 5 siblings and the first in my family to come to college. From the Southside of Chicago where you constantly hear airplanes pass your home. Carrying my parents pride and culture I walk campus everyday making them proud and showing them, and those that looked down on me, that I can make a difference in my family and society. I came to SIU to study what I…
I am so honored and humbled to have been an influence for the youth in my community, showing them that education, opportunities, and justice are for everyone regardless of life’s circumstances and arrogant opinions. I have enjoyed every moment of working with children, but I want to fight for them and their families in in ways I can only do with a career in law. Law, at its heart, creates order, and ensures vulnerable people are protected. A life of service is a noble one that I hope to achieve. A life where I can offer hope when hope seems…
I take pride in being a Mexican/American college student at Santa Ana College. I have been through my own struggles in life just as everyone else has in this city. My motivation has and shall always be my family. I push myself forward in life to be able to give back to my parents and my community. The only other person in my family that has completed college is my mother. While still raising me and working as a teacher, she received her Master’s Degree in Child and Adolescent Studies and has been a great inspiration for me to keep studying. Now she is working as a director at the SAC Child Development Center.…
Even though I have spent some time volunteering at the Salvation Army and at the local food bank, I desire to one day spend more time helping out my community. In particular, I would love to give legal aid to immigrants. Many people view immigrants as criminals, but I do not. Growing up in an immigrant household has allowed to see immigrants for what they truly are. That is, they are the most hardworking people one will ever encounter. No matter if the day is scorching hot or freezing cold, immigrants go out to work each day, determined to get ahead in society. Carrying the same work ethic, I plan to overcome the many challenges I will face in law school. I know that in the end, I will successfully overcome such…

The online (non-traditional) student is often challenged with issues that the traditional (campus-based) student is not; also, the online instructor does not realize the constraints placed upon the online student. Online students are a diverse group of learners from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds. Rovai (2002) stated certain characteristics could affect student persistence. An example of this is minority students feeling isolated in online courses. Online learners are also classified as independent, self-directed, autonomous, and internally motivated. They typically are 22-50 years of age, unable to enroll in campus-based classes due to other roles and responsibilities, and are lifelong learners (Diaz & Bontenbal as…
Coming from a Latino community, the dream of getting to college is limited. As years come more Latinos are getting enroll into colleges, but the story does not end there. Many struggle during their academic trip to get to their final stop of education which is their degree. They struggle because most Latinos are not economically stable. This is my story. I come from the country of Peru. Thanks to my father who made all the paper work, we met after many years of being distanced. When I started school here, I was urged to learn as much as possible because that motive of every Latino person in the states have to succeed. I did succeed. I was twelve when I got to New York City, I learned the language really fast, worked myself through middle school…
Being a non-traditional student, there are several different problems I encountered upon my return to school. Upon speaking with other non-traditional students, I have found that a common concern is our confidence and competence in our writing skills. In this day and age, there are many resources available to help students through the writing process.…
This is a great dream. I agree that if you want to go to college, you need to make sure you are making good grades and doing good things in high school. Going to college will be a good way to start your life as an adult and could open up many opportunities for you. I'm sure you will achieve this dream as long as you keep working…
Self-regulated learning can be defined as “The process in which [a] student is cognitively, motivationally, and behaviorally active in his or her learning.” (Zimmerman and Martinez-Pons). While this concept is relatively new, many students have embraced it over the last few decades resulting in their success. I am one of those many students that embrace this concept; some aspects stronger than the others. Planning and organizing not only play a major role in my life as a student, but in my life in general. Though I often lack the confidence to ask questions that provide a more thorough understanding of what I am trying to learn, the one aspect of my learning I can control is my learning environment.…
I love volunteering and traveling and I always have a fantasy of being a flight attendant or a manager of a non-profit organization, but in term of academics, I cannot say that I love economics and can do it as a living. However, I do need to start looking for a professional job or internship that related to economics in order to have a sense of awareness of what people do by having a degree of economics. The question makes me realize that a lot people around me are not doing what they love, even my sister. My sister graduated with a degree of Economics, and currently works at Deloitte which is one of the world top 5 business tax companies. She told me that it is not what she loves, but it is not what she hates either. The reason she stays mainly because of the working environment and people are nice, and she feels secure to have a solid job. Maybe she is right, or maybe she is wrong; maybe she is a “sheeple”, or maybe she just wants to confirm she is not doing it…
It was 8:15am on a Thursday morning and I woke up anxious to what we would do that day. I awoke, brushed my teeth, put on the clothes I picked out the night before, and glanced at the mirror, not thinking twice about what I looked like. I was too eager to go to school, but for the track meet we had that day. I rushed into the classroom, passed the morning chatter, and headed straight to my assigned seat, excited for the day. My mind then jumped to the array of events I could possibly do. I had thought too much of what my teammates might think, and it made me nervous that I had to try something new. But looking back through the process, really not knowing that I could see my talent had given me confidence because I had nothing to worry about.…
Ever since I could remember, I have been reserved when it comes to socializing in school and even outside of school. I have struggled with opening up to people and getting involved in clubs or organizations. It seemed like it got harder when I started high school. I did not seem to fit in with any group. I was so focused on my studies that I did not think anything else was important. Although I was getting good grades, I would never think to join any club or organization. I would not even hang out with friends as often because I put my focus on school and it was difficult for me to open up to diverse experiences outside of the classroom.…
The period of life, which we spend to receive education in educational institutions, is called student life. It is not only the best time of a man’s life but also the seedtime as the success and happiness in our life depend on how we have spent our student life. That is why, this life is the life of work, of duties and responsibilities if the later part of life is to be a life of achievement and success. But what exactly are the duties of this life? Giving a satisfactory answer to this question needs a rather lengthy discussion.…
