Assignment 1 As Professor Avery says, questions connect the way that people communicate, and asking questions is one of the most effective ways people connect with each other. There are five fundamental questions asked by Professor Avery that allow students think deeply and introspect themselves, in terms of understanding the purpose of having a higher education. “What do you want to do with your life?” isn’t the first time I am asked. The term “norm” is defined as the principles or rules of social life that people are expected to observe. The reason of “attending college” becomes a norm is people assume one will go to college after he or she graduates from high schools, at least that is what people observe in present. When I was at the age of 7, I was told that going to Top 50 Schools like UC Irvine was a must. Otherwise my parents would be ashamed. They even planned out a path for me in order to be “successful” in the future. Personally, I did have a commitment for myself to attend Top 50 Schools because I wanted to prove that my hard work was paying off, and I did not think I would be one of the famous people like Bill Gates who did not go to college but had an amazing life. Therefore, I became one of the “Sheeple” (a portmanteau of Sheep + People) who just follows what people normally do in order to confirm myself is not doing it …show more content…
I love volunteering and traveling and I always have a fantasy of being a flight attendant or a manager of a non-profit organization, but in term of academics, I cannot say that I love economics and can do it as a living. However, I do need to start looking for a professional job or internship that related to economics in order to have a sense of awareness of what people do by having a degree of economics. The question makes me realize that a lot people around me are not doing what they love, even my sister. My sister graduated with a degree of Economics, and currently works at Deloitte which is one of the world top 5 business tax companies. She told me that it is not what she loves, but it is not what she hates either. The reason she stays mainly because of the working environment and people are nice, and she feels secure to have a solid job. Maybe she is right, or maybe she is wrong; maybe she is a “sheeple”, or maybe she just wants to confirm she is not doing it
