Overcoming Obstacles In James Baldwin's Life
The environment that the two brothers grow up in effected their prospective on life. The harsh environment made sonny fell trapped and I believe that the usage of drugs made him forget where he was and fell free. While at the meantime we see his younger brother travel trout the city reminiscing about past event while at the same time worrying about his older brother. Born in 1924 in New York City, James Baldwin grew up I Harlem with some of the same problems that sonny had. Baldwin was born to a young single mother, Emma Jones, at Harlem Hospital. The harsh and poor projects made Soony want to escape any way possible even risking his life by join the army. This made his younger brother worry because he saw his older brother was determined to escape and he was willing to do anything to accomplish his goal. This shows how the two brothers argue about what sonny should do to achieve sonny goals “I want to join the army. Or the navy I don’t care. If I say that am old enough they’ll believe me. Then I got mad. I was because I was so scared. You must be crazy. You goddamn fool, what the hell do you want to join the army for? I just told you to get out of Harlem.” (259).The quotes shows both prospective of each of the brothers and what one is willing to do to get away from a poor and rundown Harlem. While at the same time he has his younger brother calming him down to reflect on what he should do and make a decision that doesn’t put his life in jeopardy. In this story the narrator shows that limited rescores make the black community make mistake over and over again. Even the mentors of the black community look down on the younger generation of blacks and expecting them to take the wrong path.
