Ozone
Depletion of the Ozone Layer * Function and location of the Ozone Layer
The ozone layer is a portion of earth’s atmosphere that contains high levels of ozone. Ozone (O3) is a triatomic molecule consisting of three oxygen atoms. It is an allotrope of oxygen. Ozone is formed when oxygen molecules after absorbing ultra violet photon then converts a single O2 into two atomic oxygen radicals. The atomic radicals then combine with separate O2 molecules to create two O3 molecules. The main function of the ozone layer is to absorb harmful ultraviolet radiation. These ozone molecules absorb UV light, following which ozone splits into a molecule of O2 and an oxygen atom. The oxygen atom then joins up with an oxygen molecule to regenerate ozone. The ozone layer is located in one of the five layers called the stratosphere which is located about 10-50 km above the planet. The other layers are the troposphere, mesosphere, thermosphere and exosphere. Figure 1 shows location of the Ozone layer.
Equation for the formation of Ozone (ultra violet light+ O2 O+O), then (2O+2O2O3)

This Diagram shows the location of the Ozone layer. * Compounds that deplete the Ozone and their sources
Ozone can be destroyed by a number of free radical catalysts; the most important are chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) which contains chlorine, fluorine and carbon and bromofluorocarbon or halon which contains bromine or iodine. CFCs are mainly used as refrigerants, and then in 1995 they were the base compound used in aerosol sprays. Aerosol inhalers for asthma suffer and fire extinguishers also contain CFCs. Bromofluorocarbon was used in fire fighting equipment in areas where electrical equipment were housed because of its ability not to do any type of damage to electrical equipment. Volcanic eruptions are a small contributor to ozone damage, when a volcano erupts chlorine gas as a component of hydrochloric acid is released directly into the stratosphere along with sulphur dioxide causing damage to

    1. It is known that compounds called chlorofluorocarbons (C.F.C.s) (eg. CFCl3) will break up in the presence of ultraviolet radiation, such as found in the upper atmosphere, forming single chlorine atoms: CFCl3  CFCl2 + Cl The Cl atoms then react with Ozone (O3) as outlined in the following mechanism. Step 1: Step 2: Cl + O3  ClO + O2 ClO + O  Cl + O2…

The ozone layer is a section in Earth's stratosphere that sits between ten and fifty miles above the surface. The ozone layer is a protective barrier that exists between the life forms on Earth and absorbs the harmful ultraviolet-B raditation from the sun. This protective layer is essential in order for life to exist on the Earth. Ozone is a colorless gas that is formed by a chemical reaction of oxygen molecules, oxygen atoms, and solar radiation. Contrary to popular belief, ozone is actually a greenhouse gas and the loss of it would actually decrease the global warming effect on Earth instead of increasing it (Introduction). Ozone in the stratosphere is beneficial to life on Earth, but ozone at ground level is harmful to living things. Ozone on the ground level is made by sunlight reacting with motor vehicle exhaust gases and is a major component of smog in major cities. (Green Lane).…

Ozone is produced when highly energetic solar radiation strikes molecules of oxygen O2 this causes them to split and produce O molecules. They then join with the remaining O2 and produce O3 molecules. These O3 molecules are what are known as Ozone. The "hole" in the ozone layer is not actually a hole it is a thinning of the ozone layer due to seasonal changes.…

    4. CFCs (Chlorofluorocarbons) are inorganic man-made chemicals that have been in production for more than 50 years in Canada. They were thought to be sensational substances due to their stability, nonflammable characteristic, low in toxicity, and inexpensive. However, research on CFCs showed that they have long life spans allowing them to resist being washed away in rain. Through the aid of wind, CFCs rise up into the stratosphere and into the ozone layer where they decompose into chlorine and bromine, from the ultraviolet radiation. These two chemicals are responsible for damaging the ozone layer. Some atmospheric chlorine are caused by natural occurrences such as large fires and volcanic eruptions, yet most chlorine in the ozone layer is due to CFCs from man-made products such as refrigerators, aerosols, solvents and other household items. Studies show that for every one chlorine atom that is released into the ozone layer, 100000 ozone molecules are destroyed. According to the statistics recorded in 1979, the ozone layer has decreased every single decade nearly 4% to 6% in mid-latitudes and 10% to 12% in higher southern latitudes. This constant decrease has left the ozone layer permanently damaged. Even though production of CFCs has drastically decreased over the past couple of years, the ozone layer is unable replace itself.…

On the periodic table, oxygen is the 8th element. It is located in period 2 and group 16. Oxygen is classified into many things. For example, on the periodic table, oxygen is classified as a nonmetal gas with an atomic number of 8 and atomic weight of 15.9994. In addition, it has 6 valence electrons. The symbol of oxygen is O and oxygen has 8 protons, 8 neutrons, and 8 electrons. The electron configuration of oxygen is 1s2, 2s2, 2p4. Oxygen had been produced by several chemists prior to its discovery in 1774, but they failed to recognize it as a distinct element. Joseph Priestley and Carl Wilhelm Scheele both independently discovered oxygen, but Priestly is usually given credit for the discovery. They were both able to produce oxygen by heating mercuric oxide (HgO). Priestley called the gas produced in his experiments 'dephlogisticated air' and Scheele called his 'fire air'. The name oxygen was created by Antoine Lavoisier who incorrectly believed that oxygen was necessary to form all acids. Oxygen is the third most abundant element found in the sun, and it plays a part in the carbon-nitrogen cycle, the process once thought to give the sun and stars their energy. Oxygen under excited conditions is responsible for the bright red and yellow-green colors of the Aurora. A gaseous element, oxygen forms 21% of the atmosphere by volume and is obtained by liquefaction and fractional distillation. The atmosphere of Mars contains about 0.15% oxygen. The element and its compounds make up 49.2%, by weight, of the earth's crust. About two thirds of the human body and nine tenths of water is oxygen. The physical state of oxygen is a gas. Physical properties are usually those that can be observed using our senses such as color, luster, freezing point, boiling point, melting point, density, hardness and odor. Oxygen changes from a gas to a liquid at a temperature of -182.96°C (-297.33°F) when it takes on a slightly bluish color liquid. Oxygen can then be solidified or frozen at a…
