During the last 2 years johns weight has dramatically increased he is considered to be morbidly obese, This is a concern for the health care professionals that work with him and also his parents, as johns father has coronary heart disease and high blood pressure. John recently had a medical examination which highlighted high blood pressure, which can be an early indicator of coronary heart disease. John’s problems are complicated by the fact he is on the autistic spectrum.
Behaviorists;
Could improve Johns health If John ate healthily all week then when the week finishes you could reward him with a treat for e.g. a cream cake, chocolate, sweets etc. to give him something to look forward to for eating healthily all week. He may also be rewarded by getting him a new PS3, Xbox or computer game. There are many different ways he can be rewarded and by doing this it will encourage him to eat healthily.
Could improve John’s behavior by shaping and changing it by showing him and making him understand what good behavior is. You could give him rewards for behaving well by doing this it will encourage him to want to behave. If John chose not to behave you could punish him by not giving him his reward or letting him have treats such as sweets and chocolate etc. By punishing him it shows him that he is not gaining anything from misbehaving but when he behaves he gains things so it will show him to behave.
By doing these things it will help him overcome his agoraphobia by saying ‘today you are going to look out of the window for two minutes, tomorrow you are going to stand next to the open doors and the day after you will take one step out into the garden’ by doing this it will gradually help him overcome his problem slowly and be used to being outside again.
