William Golding uses symbolism in Lord of the Flies to prove that everything bad began with goodness. Lord of the Flies is about a group of boys from England who are stranded on an island with no adults. For example, the boys were having a feast sharing and getting along. The narrator states, “The boys with the spit gave Ralph and Piggy each succulent chunk. They took the gift, dribbling. So they stood and ate beneath a sky of thunderous brass that rang with the storm coming(149).” The boys then killed simon, mistaking him for the beast. The boys chant, “Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood! Do him in!(152)” This example shows that the boys go from innocent boys to savages animals, who kill without remorse. When Piggy goes to Castle Rock to get his glasses back from Jack’s tribe he gets killed and the conch gets smashed by a boulder rock. The narrator states, “The rock struck Piggy a glancing blow from chin to knee; the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exit(181).” This example proves that the symbolism of the conch’s meaning has vanished. It meant togetherness, power and leadership, but when the conch breaks the meaning of the conch is gone. The boys act like animals and forget the true meaning of the conch, and they begin acting like animals. The environment is influencing the once innocent boys to act in an immoral way. William Golding is not the only author that proves that everything evil started form virtuousness.…

In every one of us, there is a savage monster. A monster, that, in our vulnerability, will silently kill off the good parts of ourselves. Lord of the Flies by William Golding is about a group of British boys who must survive on an island after their plane crashes. From the story, it is clear that the monsters inside us can destroy the bonds we work so hard to make. This is shown through symbolism, like the fire, which represents the fear in the group, the boys, which represents how humanity has corrupted the world we live in, and the Lord of the Flies, which represents the monster inside of us and how it affects our lives.…
“Symbolism is no mere idle fancy or corrupt egerneration: it is inherent in the very texture of human life” This is a quote from Alfred North Whitehead, an English philosopher from the early 90s, that explains that symbolism is not a pointless past time, but rather it is a part of human structure. The very existence of the human species is based solely off its ability to survive, the first society of humans where not so gifted as man is today for they had to fight and kill in order to live another day. It was eat or be eaten in there world. Nowadays, man is taught, at a very young age, that he must always act accordingly or in a civilized manner thus concealing his ancestral dark side. In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies there are many…
The Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, is renowned for having unique symbolism within the text. Piggy’s glasses, the conch, and the fire all have a deeper meaning than what is displayed on page. As the book continues, and the boys descend into savagery, the context of Piggy’s glasses, the conch, and the fire are changed into symbols of things the boys once had. Piggy’s glasses became a symbol for intelligence and innovation on the island, the conch was a symbol of order and unity, and the signal fire was symbolic for the boys’ connection with…
Lord of the Flies by William Golding is the story of a group of children who crash land on a tropical island during the time period of World War II. Similarly, the Lord of the Flies was another symbol presented in the novel which illustrated evil. In Hebrew, another word for the devil is Beelzebub and when translated to English, means the Lord of The Flies. On the other hand, Golding tried to represent Simon as Christ. When Simon confronts the pig’s head, he begins to communicate with it. The pig’s head tells Simon that evil lies within every human. The children were given a choice of taking a side, the devil on one shoulder and Christ on the other. The bloodthirsty children murdered Simon and Piggy. Yet, they were reluctant to feel guilty because evil had prospered within their hearts. The Lord of the Flies itself, was just a representation of the power of evil and it is shown when the Lord of the Flies says, “Fancy…
