The subjects of progress and growth are often confused to be the same thing, but if anyone would know the difference between them, it’d be someone with more than enough experience with both of them such as G.K Chesterton. Chesterton was raised in London where he was well-educated and had the opportunity of pursuing his passions in art and writing. An advocate for the common man, he wrote hundreds of woks and contributed them to magazines and newspapers. Chesterton was met with many opportunities to progress and grow in his life, thereby validating his insight on the subjects. In his essay, “Fancies vs. Fads”, he defines progress as a “fatal metaphor” that entails “leaving things behind” and growth as a “real idea” that means “leaving things inside us” and claims that progress makes growth more difficult to understand. I agree that such…
A person’s surroundings influence their life; family, friends, society, alcohol, and emotions affect the way a person acts and thinks in their surroundings. Constant control or oppression can cause someone to become filled with tremendous hate towards the entity that restrains them. This entity can create a brute that will commit unnatural crimes. Friends can influence one’s actions in their everyday life. This influence can cause a person to consider breaking an ultimate taboo of their society. Family influences a person’s emotions, actions, motives, and goals. The consumption of alcohol can make men become brutes and cause them to commit gruesome crimes. A person’s emotions can greatly influence their actions and control their…

An example of this is when kids can’t wait to grow up, but when they do they wish they were young again. They are so focused on being able to be independent and make their own decisions that they miss all the small memories of their childhood. When they grow up they wish they would’ve appreciated the experience more rather than focusing on being an adult. Another example of this is when people go on a vacation and they are so focused on getting to their destination that they don’t enjoy the road trip itself. The journey is just as important as the vacation itself. You can meet new people and learn new things on the way but only if you aren’t worried about getting to the end point. Lastly, if someone is always hurrying through their shift at a job, they are missing out on the experience. They could be meeting and interacting with new people but they are too fixed on completing the task at hand. It would make the job more satisfying and they could get more out of the task. Everybody should take time to soak in each experience in life, no matter how…
I struggled for several days thinking of an experience that would best answer the discussion question. The difficulty lies not so much in coming up with a situation, any situation; but a real-life experience that I could honestly say it was personal and not just a hypothetical story.…
When this happens we are empowered to make choices that are more informed and therefore more effective in helping us attain our goals. Our positions in society shaped most of what we do and when we understand how we are influenced we can adjust accordingly (Witt 2014:398). For example if I began to notice that my position in life as a student or at my job did not represent my values, goals, or norms that I want to follow I should adjust accordingly.…

Let’s start off with something simple. Progress is “advancement” or “improvement”. Change? Change is “substituting/replacing” or “transforming”. So while change may not result in progress, progress definitely requires change. Change is inevitable, but whether or not this change is in the right direction, moving forward, is what determines if there is progress. Hence, it isn’t change, but progress, that we should be aiming for.…
Life can throw you for a loop if you do not think about it and watch where it is taking you. Once I realized that I was too comfortable and dependent on my family, I started to analyze the problem and dissect each and every one around me. Who was providing what? Why were they handicapping me? How do I change this situation? Why am I blaming everyone but myself? Those were just a few of the questions I asked and also went looking for the answers the moment they came to thought. I will say it made me really depict my previous decisions and also future ones.…
