Electrical shocks, heart attacks, stabbings, gunshot wounds--emergency medical technicians, or EMTs, never know what they must deal with when they respond to a 9-1-1 call. For this reason, and due to their role in preserving life, EMT training is varied, extensive and takes places in steps. A paramedic is an EMT with advanced levels of training.

Their work is physically strenuous and can be stressful, sometimes involving life-or-death situations and patients who are suffering. Most career EMTs and paramedics work in metropolitan areas. Volunteer EMTs and paramedics are more common in small cities, towns, and rural areas. These individuals volunteer for fire departments, providers of emergency medical services, or hospitals and may respond to only a few calls per month.
