CITY DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY REPORT

Introduction

The City of Parañaque, a highly urbanized city, is the site of the well known Baclaran Redemptorist Church. Considered to be the most attended church in Asia wherein The Shrine of Our Mother of Perpetual Help is sheltered, the Baclaran Church has become a Mecca for Christian pilgrims from all over the world.

The city’s strategic location and proximity to other cities and municipalities displays the geographical advantage that the city possesses. It also hosts the country’s busiest international airport, the Ninoy Aquino International Airport; while the South Luzon Expressway cuts through the City on its way to Southern Luzon Island. Considered one of the centers for trade and business in Metro manila, the dry-goods market in Baclaran and the fishermen’s wharf are famous for the very low prices of variety of products and fresh seafoods; while its rich culture is marked by the traditional Caracol, Sayaw ng Pagbati, and the observance of Sinakulo among other things.

Blessed with a large undeveloped reclaimed area, numerous quality residential subdivision and townhouses, the City’s potential for growth and development in the coming years is inevitable.

However, like any other city in the metro, Parañaque also faces developmental challenges brought about by rapid urbanization, i.e., inadequate basic services, growth of informal settlements, environmental issues, urban transport, insufficient source of funds, and more. Nevertheless, with the introduction and guidance of the City Development Strategies, the support and active participation of all the stakeholders, and the committed and efficient leadership of all City Officials, Parañaque hopes to capitalize on its strengths and opportunities to further stimulate its economic growth potential.

With this aspiration in mind, the City Of Parañaque takes pride in envisioning itself as the “Residential Haven of the Metro South”. PARAÑAQUE CDS TEAM

The economic development of a country can be defined as the growth of industry, wealth, employment and the level of urbanisation. The planning and management issues that are linked to economic development, are those associated with processes such as urbanisation, suburbanisation and counter-urbanisation of cities. These may include pollution of water, air and noise. Other issues may be the increase in transport and waste, created by people living, travelling through and working in urban areas. These problems need solutions, which often leads to planning and carrying out redevelopment of urban areas. The effects of urbanisation on a city can be seen in Sao Paolo, a newly industrialised country in Brazil where housing improvement schemes are evident. Furthermore we can see issues of planning and management in the UK, a more economically developed country, due to increasing re-urbanisation and suburbanisation. Using these 2 counties of different levels of development, I will be able to eventually assess to what extent the level of economic development will affect planning and management of cities.…

According to Anthony Flint, some administration officials in Massachusetts tend to give in to sprawl because the state needs jobs and growth (24). They are likely to give the green light to developers in the suburbs in order to attract investment and create jobs. In fact, smart growth can also create job opportunities. Smart growth enables people to live, work, and entertain in the same neighborhood. More people are willing to live in such neighborhoods. Therefore, mixed-use development can attract residents and businesses. In 2010, Biogen, a large biotechnology company, moved from Cambridge, Massachusetts, to a suburban area in Weston, but it moved back in 2014 (Zimmerman). Locating in walkable downtown has many advantages. For example, locating downtown can attract and retain excellent employees and move closer to customers. Locating in vibrant and walkable communities has become a competitive advantage of companies when they hire employees, build brand identity, and compete with…

When urbanization takes over a country it happens because the nation’s economies move from farms to towns to cities, so that hubs for commerce and activity are introduced into the country. When poorer people decide to relocate into the hubs from the outside for better opportunities, urbanization’s momentum continues to augment even more. Examples of this can be seen in Sao Paulo, Mexico City, and Shanghai. When cities become overcrowded the new residents of the city, the low-income families, create illegal squatting communities on the outskirts of the city. The issue with this is that more often than not, individuals have no rights to the land and horrible living conditions (Voices, 2).…
