Pardon The Gym Research Paper
Pardon the cliff-hanger. Last post I talked about my Doctor's visit, but I completely left out the gym moment.

Why? Well frankly I was too irritated to even talk about the funny gym moment and plus, I'd like to keep your attention with relatively shorter posts.

Typical news years resolutions; my sister, my mom and I found ourselves registering at a local gym. My aunt and myself had already made an account a week before they did, so my Mom and Sister only needed to 'add' onto our account.

At the gym, we were talking to a lovely woman named Christine. She truly was awesome-we talked about all of our physical fitness goals, the best deal, some classes offered, and of course our interest in buying cute exercise clothes (A true priority when

Christine's eyes were wide open; not sure if it was due to fear of crossing some privacy line or general curiosity about my speech-perhaps both.

I butted in, "Yeah, it's actually a childhood speech disorder, and now it just sounds like an accent."

Now when I say this, some people quickly apologize for even asking about it. This is absolutely a pet-peeve of mine. Never apologize for asking a question. You asked it and if the answer freaks you out-you should own it unapologetically. Plus, saying 'Sorry' does not make the question itself disappear nor is there anything to say 'sorry' for.

I try to respond in a way that eases the curious individual's uncomfortability or insecurity that may arise after discovering that my speech is not an accent. Hence, when people apologize for asking then I feel that I've failed to settle their insecurities. Oh the irony! They probably assume I am insecure about my speech or that they've crossed some line, thus they apologize. Yet, their apology in itself produces my personal assumption that I have made them feel insecure.

Clearly my sister's initial and nonchalant response provided no awkward nor unnecessary

Now, I love it when people think my accent is 'cool.' It boosts my confidence for sure, but I always try to exude confidence to begin with when talking about my speech. See, if she were to have asked and my sister or myself were to respond awkwardly or with hesitation, she may have been compelled to apologize merely for asking.

As far as my sister goes, she knows me way too well. The fact she gave the same response I give and have given for years in regards to Apraxia is honestly reassuring and freaky. As a kid, she actually has never heard my 'accent.' So when others, especially her classmates, would ask about why I speak the way I do she'd be bewildered as to what they were talking about. Now, clearly after sixteen years and seeing encountering perhaps hundreds of people asking me about my speech, she knows the usual explanation to give. Perhaps I need to find some variations in answering though-I've become too predictable

As one of the most dynamic countries that primarily use the English language, the United States is a wonderland in which each state has its own accent and that all Americans take pride in their own language culture. In the documentary film Do You Speak American?, celebrated journalist and novelist Robert MacNeil sets out on a journey all around the United States, exploring how the language of America defines, unites, and separates its people. The title of the film proposes an intriguing question: what does it mean by speaking American? Speaking American is not just a matter of speaking English, and the answer to that question is far more complex. According to this film, not all Americans speak English, and those who do tend to speak it in different ways. As MacNeil explains, the reasons American accents vary…

It is import to notice the other persons reaction when talking to them as we will be able to see or judge, through their body language ,tone and facial expressions, whether or not they are happy with what we am saying. Over time, the accent vanished and I became a proper southern young gentleman. My father speaks with Received Pronunciation, even though he was also born in the Midlands, specifically Rugby. Most of my conversations with my father involve school and progression and most of his statements are declarative. As he is “creative academic”, a phrase he created to explain his job of a Drama examiner, it is expected for him to talk mainly about academia relating to his subject knowledge My mother had a completely different background. She was brought up in a harsh borough of London called White City. She came from a Ghanaian background and her father was the Chief of the Yarboi Tribe. Her father’s family first landed in Liverpool before slowly moving to London. Even with this contrapuntal background, she also talks with RP. She believes that…

The more I focused on my accent, the more I hated the way it sounded. Deep down in me I hoped I could train my accent away. For months I would watch movies and national geographic documentaries to mimic the accents of the actors and narrators. My parents thought it was a little strange but didn’t seem too worried. Soon I was getting better and it became fun to learn the rules that distinguish accents and pretty soon I was learning to mimic a few others besides…

People base there opinions of you, especially if they just met you, on the way you speak. I can relate to the mistreatment that Tan’s mother experienced from the stockbroker. I can understand Tan’s mothers frustration when she said, “Why he don’t send me check, already two weeks late. So mad he lie to me, losing me money.”(Tan 635) She is not stupid, she gets it. Tan’s mother knows she is being mistreated because of the way she uses the English language. If you have a different accent people notice it. I have found that people often judge me based on my southern accent. They make fun of my accent and imply that I am not as smart as they are. Often after they get to know me better they realize that I am smart and I am capable of more than they originally thought.. Unfortunately, first impressions can affect how people treat you. I did a questionnaire based on my idiolect. After asking a few people I found out that I use a lot of hedges ‘kind of’ which I failed to notice, I usually use this when my friends are asking me something negative, like, do I look ugly? Am I dumb? I don’t say no, I use hedges because I don’t want to be straight forward and hurt their feelings. And they also noticed that I usually use elision, for example, saying ‘it’s’ instead of ‘it is’, it is normal amongst teenager as it is our style of speaking and can be caused by accent.…
