Research has shown that individuals do indeed take from their own childhood experiences and apply these when raising their own children (Heath, 2013). Specifically, communication with the child and the parent’s view of them is impacted by own experiences. Those individuals with secure attachments to their own parents were more likely to be emotionally supportive, as well as be able to set clear limits (qualities of an authoritative parenting style). Individuals on the other end of the spectrum, with an attachment that was dismissive and insecure with their own parents tend to place high priority on their independence (Heath, 2013). This can be seen in Appendix A in question #1 where the balance of nurturance, discipline and respect is discussed (Heath, 2013). Her approach to discipline can also be categorized under authoritative parenting because it is supportive, rather than punitive as seen when Maria discusses logical consequences and tough love, but also the fact that she will always be there for her children (Green, 2018a).
