A. Background B. Parkour and Freerunning are both ways of moving through urban and natural environment, expressing yourself through natural and primal movement, as well as exploring the bodies ability to flip and twist in midair, while retaining the proper momentum to move.
II. Humble Beginnings : Vietnam and David Belle. A. First created by French soldiers in Vietnam. 1. Used to escape enemy attacks by moving through both urban environments like villages and buildings, and natural ones, like the surrounding Jungle, or to reach a downed ally, such as a man on a rooftop who was hit by enemy fire. 2. A practitioner of this modality calls himself a traceur, or herself a traceuse. Many parkour groups exist to promote the discipline, some choosing to do so commercially, others sticking to the more purist form, such as David Belle and Daniel Ilabaca. B. David Belle 1. This style of motion was later adopted by David Belle. 2. Belle is thought to be the "Father" of Modern Parkour. C. Formative Years 1. In 1988, at the age of 15, Belle obtained his French national First Aid certificate and UFOLEP certificate of gymnastics leadership. 2.
