In Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury explains how television has taken over the societies lives. People in their society have rooms in their houses dedicated to just TV, those rooms are called parlor rooms. There were very few people who didn’t use the new technology throughout the story. Bradbury wrote about a society who was in need of a change and Montag, Faber, and Clarisse were the people who could change it.
Mildred the wife of Montag, loved to watch TV. Almost everyday Montag would find Mildred in the parlor room watching TV. She had the parlor walls on most of the time throughout the novel. Montag, Faber, and Clarisse were the people throughout the novel who didn’t use the technology. Though, Montag was married to Mildred, he never really watched the parlor walls. On page 94 it says, “Montag reached into the parlor wall and pulled the main switch.” Montag turned off the parlor walls like it wasn’t a big deal. To Montag, turning off the parlor walls was just like turning anything else off. When Montag went into Faber house for the first time, he noticed that he didn’t have parlor walls. All Faber owned was a small television set. On page 132 Montag went to Faber’s house while he was being chased. Montag asked Faber how close they were to him and Faber went to his TV “He took Montag quickly into the bedroom and lifted a picture frame aside revealing a television screen the size of a postal card.” Faber then explained to Montag that he had never wanted a large screen, he only wanted something he could block easily. Faber never cared for the technology, he was never truly affected by it. Clarisse was another character in the novel who was affected by technology. On page 23 she told Montag “ The psychiatrist wants to know why I go out and hike around in the forests and watch the birds and collect butterflies.” Clarisse was a girl who didn’t like to stay indoors and watch the parlor walls, she liked to go outside and experience the world.
