The last category of non-chargeable time off, extended weekends, occurs approximately once a month in conjunction with federal holidays. During federal holidays, soldiers typically get a four-day weekend, which consists of a Friday through Monday off. In addition to federal holidays, soldiers usually get a day off for the Army’s birthday on 15 June and late calls after major sporting events. During late calls, soldiers get to skip their physical training, which occurs at 6:30 a.m., and report in to work at 9:00 a.m. During December and January there are multiple four day weekends for Christmas, New Year, and Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Also during the last three weeks of December, there are half-day work schedules because it is a block leave time. Block leave periods are designated to allow soldiers to use leave to spend time with family and friends such as Christmas.
