This play takes place in the late 1960’s and the main characters are Paul and Corie Bratter who are newly weds. They are on their way to their new apartment in New York. When they arrive in their apartment they are surprised with multiple flights of stairs leading to their apartment, Corie is excited and has a good outlook and believes that it will be perfect, despite the stairs. Paul, however, does not think the apartment will be satisfactory. He complains about the hole in the sky light and the rent, and how cold it is once they’ve reached the apartment. The apartment is small and consists of one bedroom and one bathroom. Corie is looking forward to turning it into the apartment of her dreams. Meanwhile, Paul is unsure and is anxious about his first case in court tomorrow morning. The couple believes that their furniture will be arriving that evening.
Once Corie and Paul have had a few minutes to absorb the appearance of the apartment and briefly discuss matters. The doorbell buzzes, which is believed by Corie to be Bloomingdales (the furniture). However, she is shocked by the voice of her mother. Corie’s mother is just now arriving to see the apartment and Corie is very nervous about her seeing the apartment before it is fixed up. Corie mentions to her that she feels her mother is lacking romance in her life. After she leaves Paul begins working in the empty bedroom, while the furniture still has not arrived. Time skips to night and the two are going to bed on the floor with their coats on. Just when they’ve got settled Victor Velasco, who lives in the attic arrives and they make a date for dinner with the Bratters for tuesday night. Corie calls her mother to confirm their pre-existing plans at 2am. Corie’s mother shows up for dinner. The apartment is then finished and set up, her mother has been set up on a blind date with Mr.
