The inference is that the man is in need of help and the assumption is anyone lying in the gutter is in need of help. The second situation is a woman in a wheelchair. The inference is she must have a sad life and the assumption is all people in wheelchairs have a sad life. Third situation is a police officer trails your car closely for several blocks. Chapter 1 of Critical Thinking, Reading, and Writing: A Brief Guide to Argument by Sylvan Barnet, Hugo Bedau, and John O’Hara states that critical thinking has been misunderstood as negative and should be understood as the act of being able to think skillfully, observationally and consciously. Thus making the critical thinker capable of having sound judgment by being able to analyze the situation at hand intelligently and deliberately. In this chapter, I learned that being a critical thinker, reader and writer requires being capable of finding solutions to ideas, questions, and concerns by becoming aware of circumstances.…

After this class, however, I learned that the most important thing is about the progress you make and your ability to see all spectrums of a situation. After retraining my mind, I have been able to think of multiple solutions for a problem when before, I might have only thought of one or two. This closed me off from the world, limiting me from multiple other beliefs, social experiences, and options. In my junior year of high school, we listened to an adult speaker explain to us his views on the human mind. He explained that people’s instincts are to judge quickly and more often than not tend to not look beyond than what something may appear to be. By adjusting my mindset because of my English class, I have been able to avoid this and think of multiple solutions rather than a single one.…
