Women in Sport:
Should professional women Tennis players be paid the same amount as professional men Tennis players?
INTRODUCTION The game Tennis has been around since the late 19th century and according to the Tennis Welcome Centre (2010), it still currently loved and enjoyed by many people. It is a very popular sport worldwide and it has one of the most controversial issues on the sporting world today. Issues and comparisons between men and women in sport have been present and one of the most discussed issues in the Tennis world today related to gender as stated by Germano (2012) is the sportsmen and women’s prize money. The issue of genders is further supported by Miller who said in 2001, “There is a long tradition of media concern about the sexual credentials of women tennis players.” (Jones, 2010)
According to Newman of The Independent (2006), the big question is “Should professional women Tennis players be paid the same amount as professional men Tennis players?” Is it fair that women play sets of three and men play sets of five yet both genders get the same amount of money? Newman (2006) also stated that this issue has been around and is very controversial because it relates to gender discrimination, physical differences regarding performance & abilities between sexes and also has something to do with the equality between professional sports players in general.
ANALYSIS Sportswomen have always been compared to men in terms of their performance; and in any sport there will always be a men’s and women’s category. According to Rugg (2012), one of the most debated issues in sport is about men and women Tennis players and their salaries. We all know that in the game of Tennis, in order for you to win, women must play sets of three and men must play sets of five.
