Williams has taken to assist in creating gains in student achievement is to institute data board meetings at each grade level. As part of the PLC process, teachers gather data about students’ specific learning needs and meet together weekly to analyze this data together. Initial screening is done early in the year to establish a base line for each student’s level of learning. Teachers record this data on color coded cards and place them into targeted intervention groups and attach the cards to a bi-folding board. They bring this data to a meeting with Mrs. Williams as well as the intervention specialist and special education teachers. During these meetings each student’s needs are discussed and decisions are made as a team about what intervention programs will best meet their needs. After six to eight weeks of working with students with these initial interventions, the team reconvenes with a second round of assessment data to analyze progress that has been made. Then the team discusses what possible changes to make to the interventions being offered and make necessary changes. This process continues until the end of the school year. At the end of the year, all the colored cards are moved around on the board indicating the progress students have made. Paraprofessionals are an integral part of a student’s educational experience. Paraprofessionals are often untrained, unsupervised, and unprepared however, they are still expected to assist with classroom instruction. It is essential that paraprofessionals are fluent in research based instructional strategies in order to play more effective roles in the classroom. To fulfill my three-hour field experience, I observed in Kristen Yenchak’s Emotional Support (BASD) classroom at Bloomsburg Middle School, on September 21, 2016 from 11:00am – 3:00pm. Kristen Yenchak’s classroom was made up of nine students ranging from sixth to eighth grade. There were also two paraprofessionals in the classroom to help students when they came to the class and also go and assist students while they are in general education classes. By having two paraprofessionals and one teacher in the classroom it allowed for the class to have instructional sizes of 1:1 or 1:3. Conductors lead the group and provide a motivating and supportive environment. As America’s educational system continues to strengthen and develop, a focus on individualized instruction and intervention within the regular education classroom has been brought forth in an attempt to keep struggling students from falling behind. This specific additional instruction and intervention, known as Response to Intervention in most states (RtI), is not only viewed as a push towards the improvement of education for all students, but is also being used as the means by which decisions regarding a student’s special education eligibility is based upon. However, for such a program to ultimately be beneficial, it will be up to the schools to ensure that the education professionals are putting forth significant effort in using the most appropriate type of intervention for that specific student. It will be the RtI team’s duty to define the student’s problem, plan an intervention, implement the intervention, and regularly evaluate the student’s progress (Martinez & Young, 2011, p. 44). The college student who has served this country’s military represent a growing population on college campuses. This growth has led to more attention being put into their health and adjustment while being college students. The research conducted by authors Whiteman, Barry, Mroczek, and Macdermid suggest that students who are serving or are veterans may have trouble connecting with their peers and feel rather isolate and as if they have to keep to themselves.
