CHAPTER 6 ONLINE ASSIGNMENT DUE 7/30/13
TASK: Locate a peer-reviewed journal article related to literacy evaluation/intervention and write a research summary on the article. The article should be no more than 5 years old. Please follow the format located on the following page of this assignment.
OBJECTIVES: This assignment will serve as an introduction to scholarly journal articles. As a Speech-Language Pathologist it is imperative that you use the latest research to design effective methods to treat your clients. After this assignment you should:
1) Gain experience in searching for scholarly articles using internet resources and database materials.
2) Gain exposure to peer-reviewed journal articles and how they are written.
3) Be able to extract important details and information from a scholarly article.
4) Be able to adequately analyze and critique an article.

I. Purpose of Study (Specific reason for study) Why is this study being done?
What is the “Statement?”
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of an experimentally derived reading intervention, delivered by peers, on the oral reading fluency of a first-grade student.
II. Rationale for the Study (Theory behind the study)
A. What led the author(s) to pursue the study?
The authors think that oral reading fluency is a critical prerequisite to independent comprehension of text. Unfortunately, oral reading fluency is frequently neglected by classroom who may feel pressed to spend more time working on comprehension tasks and not devote sufficient time to practicing oral reading of connected texts.     To start the literacy learner study, the student completed an oral reading fluency assessment. This was completed using DIBELS Next (Dynamic Measurement Group, 2013). This student read 22 words per minute with 73% accuracy. According to the DIBELS report, this student requires intensive instruction and scored in red on the assessment. Because the student scored in red, he had to complete an Informal Phonics Inventory (McKenna & Stahl, 2008, p. 125-131).     Speech Language Pathology deals and works with a wide range of human communication and disorders, which include speech, language, cognitive communication, and swallowing.     In comparison, when students are reading with a teacher they are more nerves and more likely to make mistakes when reading. Maisinger, Schwanenflugel, Bradley, and Stahl (2004) in their study concluded when students are given the opportunity to participate in partner reading they have higher self confidence based on the positive feedback they receive from their partner. The research also measured students ability to stay on task when given the responsibility of reading with a selective partner. Students did follow directions and worked according to the given instruction (pp. 134- 137). Helping students improve their fluency is helping them over come those challenging words they continue to struggle with. Students also need to build confidence when they are reading to avoid making mistakes when they are reading. They need to have a sense of confidence when they read to someone else, and by hearing how their partner read aloud will allow readers to have an reading expectation from someone their age. The study did not mentioned students with learning disabilies or ELL, but this can be adaptable to them by placing them with students who are closer to their reading level and not their grade reading level. The study making the connection of improving fluency with the use of peer assistance with help the four students participating in the literacy intervention by assisting the person who is reading. They will be able to help each other by reading those unknown words and listening to how to read in a normal reading paist.- Check if anything else needs to added to this…
