R.B. is a 36 year old male who dove off the back of a boat into shallow water and sustained a cervical burst fracture of the 4-5 vertebrae. He had congenital narrowing of the spinal canal which made his injury more devastating because as his spinal cord swelled after the accident it ascended up the spinal cord leaving him unable to feel or move below the level of C2 and unable to breathe on his own. Once the R.B. was stable enough he was transferred to a rehabilitation hospital that specialized in spinal cord injuries.…
The patient is my brother Kevin, a 50 year old male, whom was of normal health prior to the accident.…
The following court case against Compton Unified School District shares that there is trauma/complex trauma that has been affecting students who are from “high poverty neighborhoods”. Students who experience “violence and loss” are likely to have trauma. Students who are exposed multiple events of “violence and loss” experience complex trauma. to the point where they can no longer cope with their disability in order reach their fullest academic potential. Trauma is similar to PTSD because students cannot focus alongside their peers when they have been a part of a horrific event. Within the text, Peter was shown as an ideal student who experienced complex trauma, due to the fact that he had been a victim of both sexual and physical trauma in…
Football plays a great part in the United States. It is a part of our culture and is a part of the atmosphere in the fall when school is about to start. It is an amusing experience for a lot of people and their families. This is what make football a part of our culture. One thing to actually think about though is what is essentially happening to the children, the young adults, and athletes involved in this sport; they are growing older then, attending college or even playing professional football with head injuries. Understanding that in football there are many collisions of the head to somebody else’s head or other body parts. Although, the brain sits inside of a cranial vault, also known as the skull. Even wearing the best equipment…
Spinal cord injuries commonly occur after trauma, with around 10,000 new injuries occurring each year. The majority of victims are males aged 16-30, typically resulting from motor vehicle collisions and falls. Spinal cord injuries are divided into two categories, complete and incomplete. A complete injury means that there is no function below the level of lesion, meaning there is no sensation or voluntary movement. An incomplete injury means there is little function below the level of injury, such as being able to move one limb or being able to feel parts of the body which cannot be…
The machines were beeping and there were pools of blood beside the woman. She was laying in the middle of the floor but nothing could be done. The victim was on the television. The incident wasn’t real, but the experience was undeniable. Medical dramas have become so realistic, that we often blur the line between what is real and what is fictional. On television, hospitals experience abundant traumas, rarely experience death, and doctors are glorified as heroes, whereas in reality it is not as dramatic.…

Currently I am working with clients with substance use disorders at an all men residential treatment program. I had developed my theoretical orientation from Albert Ellis’s Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), Aaron Beck’s Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), and Carl Roger’s Client-Centered Therapy (CCT). Combining examining faulty thinking, distinguishing thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, and practicing distress management skills, I have seen significant progress clients have made in recovery. The Rogerian idea of providing a warm and safe environment for client to express feelings and thoughts…
Spinal cord injuries are caused by vehicle crashes, falls, violence, sports and recreational activities such as diving. Injury prevention educators and VIP educators learn to present programs that begin by showing models of the brain and spinal cord, and explaining what they do and how they work. Then they point out how easily they can be injured, and that there are no cures for these injuries. They go on to describe how injuries to the spinal cord affect movement, and your life.…

Complex trauma, or Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD), is a form of repetitive, interpersonal trauma that often occurs during childhood, such as sexual abuse or domestic violence (Courtois, 2008). In 2015, 9.2 out of every 1000 children were reported as victims of neglect (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, 2017). As these children develop into adulthood, evidence of complex trauma may appear in the form of cognitive and behavioral impairments, as well as various mood and personality disorders (Olson-Morrison, 2017). Treatment is often focused on the disorders rather than the actual trauma itself. Courtois (2008) outlines seven areas of impairment which serve as diagnostic criteria for complex trauma. She argues that cultivating…
Mr. J. is an 84 year old man who was admitted to the hospital for assessment after a fall. His physical assessment indicated multiple contusions to the face and shoulder, an unkept appearance and possible malnourished state. While a CAT scan and x-ray showed no fractures or bleeding, the fact that the patient had head trauma was most alarming. Traumatic injury to the head could lead to a hemorrhagic stroke or cerebrovascular accident, could be life threatening, and would require immediate intervention from the healthcare team. In particular, a thrombus could occur up to several days after head trauma (National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke [NINDS], 2013). Head trauma…

Health care insurance companies would not approve for patient care at the hospital unless, care involved life threatening trauma. The patient who presented with health insurance was stabilized and transferred to another health care facility on the insurance provider list.…
