Performance VS Ability "Thinking is easy, acting is difficult, and to put one's thoughts into action is the most difficult thing in the world." Like this quote by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, we were taught that life is about what we do, rather than what we know. We were told that putting our ideas into action is better than just simply having an idea. There is a huge correlation between setting a goal in life, setting out to achieve that goal, and actually making it happen. There are so many dreamers in the world, but the most memorable ones, are the ones who chase them. With success being the goal of the masses, a person should be judged based on what they do rather than what they know. Famous explorers traveled to new lands based solely on inklings and the stars as guides, inventers turned complex ideas into some of the world’s most useful tools, and schools generally grade on the work that you do, rather than what you know in your head.
As children, we all remember hearing the rhyme, “In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue.” This has to be the best example of someone going after what they believed in. In the year 1492 Columbus set out to prove to Europe that the world was not flat, which at the time was the belief of many. Despite the fact that if he was wrong, it was said that he would fall off of the earth; Columbus didn’t let anything stop him from seeking the truth. Like a true explorer, Columbus forged an expedition with himself and a few reluctant crew members. If not for the courage and effort of Columbus, who knows how long it would have taken for someone to “discover” America. The Expeditions of Columbus made it possible for many other explorers, ultimately leading to trade and greater migration. Although Columbus died rather poor and was despised by many, his discoveries, knowledge and most importantly his actions, helped shape the world today.
