Period 5 Essential Questions
Identity:
How did migration to the United States change popular ideas of American identity and citizenship as well as regional and racial identities? How did the conflicts that lead to civil war change popular ideas about national, regional, and racial identities throughout this period? Popular ideas of american identity and citizenship were changed by the migration. With the new people came new cultural beliefs, strong sense of nationality and patriotism this lead to new ideas about the government. This caused more tensions and the north and south divide affected all multiple americans views such as politicians. Many thought the other side was trying to oppress them with their different views.
Work Exchange and Technology:
How did the maturing of Northern Manufacturing and the adherence of the south to an agricultural economy change the national economic system by 1877?
While the North vered toward a mechanical future of efficiency and invention the Southern dependence on their cotton industry kept them at a stand still. By 1877 prior to the compromise which ended Southern Reconstruction the Southern economic system was in a steady decline as demand for cotton slowly shifted while the North's demand for manufactured goods continued its steady incline.
Peopling:
How did the growth of mass migration to the United States and the railroad affect settlement patterns in the cities in the west?
The growth of mass migration to the United States caused massive population changes which tended to slow as immigrants settled into large towns and cities near or centered around the growing railroads which promised life and fortune to the prospective Americans.
Politics and Power:
Why did the attempts at compromise before the war fail to prevent the conflict? To what extent and in what ways, did the Civil War and reconstruction transform
American political and social relationships?
