Perks Of Being A Wallflower
Music is ubiquitous. All age groups love it, from babies to centenarians, and you’ll find it in every corner of the earth. Whether you go to the quiet suburbs of America, to the bustling neon-filled city of Tokyo, to even the indigenous tribes of Australia, it’ll be there. In Stephen Chbosky's novel Perks of Being a Wallflower, music plays an equally prevalent role in the life of main character Charlie. It helps him with anything from feeling better, to connecting to others, to understanding himself. Charlie superbly summarizes my relationship with music and how it has shaped my life and is incredibly relatable. Showing a song you love to someone is one of the greatest feelings in the world, and Charlie does exactly this by giving a special record of his to Sam, saying “Inside the card, I told Sam that the present I gave her was given to me by my Aunt Helen. It was an old 45 record that had the Beatles’ song ‘Something.’ I used to listen to it all the time when I was little and thinking about grown-up things” (Chbosky 106). He could have gotten Sam the entire Abbey Road album or money to buy her own vinyl, but nothing can match giving her his own copy of one of his favorite songs. Just imagining giving away something with that much sentimental value away is mind-boggling. Charlie’s own aunt gave him the record and it’s been with him for years, yet he’s willing to gift it to Sam. If that doesn’t show his love for her, I don’t know what will. While I haven’t given away vinyls to people, showing my favorite music to people is still a special event for me and it allows me to bond with others. Recently, I’ve gotten extremely into the Beatles and I’ve had great conversations about it with a multitude of people in my life. One day, my grandpa picked me up from school and saw my Beatles and to my shock, he told me how he liked them.
