The concept of high school popularity has been prevalent through many coming of age movies since the concept was created. Perks to Being a Wallflower (Chbosky, 2009) by Stephen Chbosky challenges the concept of high school popularity with finding oneself through the means of true friendship, personal goals, and most importantly finding what is important in life. Chbosky shows the audience the life of Charlie Kelmeckis and how he confronts being a troubled teenager. The film gives premise to the audience that Charlie does not fit in because of the lack of friends and past troubles he faced as a young child. The story revolved around the choices that Charlie made throughout the film. If Charlie had never met Sam and Patrick, he would have never been able to ‘bloom’ as a wallflower and hence realize the perks of being a wallflower. From the beginning of the film until the very end, the audience has a firsthand view of the negative and positive perks of what life is like as a ‘wallflower’. The negative and positive effects can be seen through Charlie’s difficulty to interact with others, especially shown at the Homecoming Weekend Party. Instead of interacting with others and socializing amongst his peers, he observes what’s going on around him and trying to understand. What makes Charlie a wallflower is that he is constantly in search for a greater understanding of himself, his friends and the society around him. He is trying to come to an understanding with the various happy and sad events he has been through so he could finally accept himself. His close friend Patrick reassures this by one of his most acclaimed quotes, “You didn't do anything. We just want to toast to our new friend. You see things and you understand. You're a wallflower.” Patrick’s validation makes it easier for Charlie to find value in himself.
