In his essay, “I Just Wanna Be Average,” author Mike Rose says, “students will float to the mark you set” (164). From my past experiences, I completely agree that students will work harder if their teachers set the standards high. Generally, teenagers do not have high goals or standards for themselves, so it is up to the teachers to encourage and push the students towards success. Throughout his excerpt, Rose shows through numerous examples that teachers are a vital part to a student’s success in life.…
Alternative Job Shadow Report An occupational therapist has many options when it comes to areas of practice. One venue, that I could potentially work in, that sparks my interest, is mental health. Someone who is struggling with mental health is in a very vulnerable position and I think my disposition would be beneficial in this setting. I have struggled with depression myself and I realize how important an empathetic listener can be.…
There is perseverance seen in most of the characters in the novel. First of all, the characters do not have the desire to give up on something, no matter the circumstances. For instance, Liesel writes a letter to her mom and sends it, using Rosa’s laundry money. To demonstrate, Liesel commits to writing the letter and risks using Rosa’s money that Rosa worked hard for the family, to send a letter to her real mother. Secondly, they progress on their skills to prove to someone that they can do it. Particularly, an idea of this is when Liesel learns how to read and write with Hans. This example clarifies she was having private lessons all day and night because she wanted to prove to her teacher and classmates that she can have the skills, even…
But when we do not give up, at the end of the tunnel, there is always light, and it only benefits us. Sometimes we are put in tough situations our self, for example, a student may be doing badly on his/her tests and assignments, but instead of deciding to just drop out of school, if he or she has perseverance and persistence, he/she will continue to study harder, focus in class more, and ask for extra help. Eventually their hard work will pay off, and the student will start to accomplish higher grades on his/her tests and…
During my early years of education, school was a bit more challenging for me than the average student. Consistently my performance appeared below expectations and I lacked the ability to comprehend information as quickly and efficiently as other students. Reciting the dreadful memories I experienced during my early childhood literacy development remain fluent this very moment. Classes were my least desirable event to experience everyday, and my attitude and mindset during those school hours did not enhance it. Being vocally active in the classroom was a challenge that I never willing conquered, I was not accustomed to speaking in front of other people, especially not my competitors. Often I would find myself standing within the perimeters…
Growing up in public school, I was always the different kid. I got a new nickname every week. Through my lifetime, I would get knocked down mentally and always seemed to find a way to pick myself up just for the little time I had until I got knocked down again. These moments as a child affected my hope and perseverance now as a teenager.…
The Air Force runs on three Core Values: Integrity First, Service Before Self, and Excellence in All We Do. In this essay, we’ll be looking at the first of those. Integrity comes first in the list because it forms the basis of all we do. AFI 1-1 describes it as “the willingness to do what is right even when no one is looking. It is the moral compass – the voice of self-control and the basis for the trust that is essential in today’s military. All airmen must have unquestionable integrity so that their leaders can trust them to perform their duties correctly even without direct supervision. This character trait can be broken down into several facets, including courage, honesty, responsibility, accountability, and fairness. Here we’ll briefly examine those, starting with courage.…
I remember hating school for a very long time. No matter how much and how hard I studied, I never could perform as well as my peers. I felt like I had to work twice as hard and long as other students. I would soon come to know that the reasons for my hating school were because I have issues in the areas of concentration, reading problems, and developed chronic migraines. Thankfully, through perseverance, my family and I were able to determine what my issue were which helped me to obtain the confidence and determination to overcome future obstacles…
Every major event in my life has shaped who I am, particularly, how I approach my academics. Helping my family has made me selfless. I strive to help others first, whenever possible. Balancing family and school work has made me a reliable person who always perseveres. Working with my parents has allowed me to value, appreciate and take advantage of every educational opportunity. Acquiring an education is critical to me because it gives value to all of my parents’ hard work. I have learned that everything should be done with compassion and no obstacle is…
Here I would like to say teachers take great pains in teaching so that their students can learn more lessons and pass the examination with high marks. All these examples tell us that there is no effortless success in life. There is nothing we can get easily and readily. To sum up, we cannot gain any success without pain or effort.…
The power of yet is fascinating when it comes to the education of teenage students. When students are given a failing grade, they would think, “I’m nothing, I’m nowhere.” but if they got a grade “Not Yet”, they understand that they are learning thing and are improving themselves. It gives you a path into the future. According to a research by professor Dweck, the students who are willing to take challenges and face difficulties engage in the studies deeply, and they are constantly learning from their mistakes. These students have the so-called growth mindset. The idea that abilities can be developed. In comparison, students who fear challenges and try to run from their errors were gripped in the tyranny of now. Their brains show hardly any electrical activities as they confronted an error. These students are the ones with the “fixed mindset”. who don’t engage with any challenges. Nowadays, a generation of young workers can’t get through the day without an award. Professor Dweck thinks that instead of praising intelligence and talents, we should praise the process that kids engage in. There effort, strategies, focus, perseverance and their improvement. Every time students push out of their comfort zone, to learn something new and difficult, the neurons in their brains can form new, stronger connections which make them smarter. Studies showed that the kids who were not taught the growth mindset continue to show declining grade. However, the ones who were taught this lesson, showed a sharp rebound in their grades.…
Back when I was in grade 6, I was one of those kids who didn’t really care about school and never really bothered to do homework. I thought to myself “What was the point in learning things like the history of Canada if we are never going to apply it in real life”? Why was I learning about art if I’m not planning to be an artist? But then my mom taught me an unforgettable and valuable lesson. She taught me that even though we might not use all the knowledge we learn from school in real life, education is still important. I need to have a good education to be successful in the future. If I do well in school and get into an honourable university I can learn the things I enjoy and have my choice of work. I would be able support my family and be happy with my job. She always tells me that I am considered lucky to be even able to have an education because kids elsewhere who yearn to have an education won’t be able to get one as they are unable to afford one. I shouldn’t think that school is boring and useless and instead think of it as a rare opportunity to learn. Whenever I’m not doing well in school, my mom would always motivate me to keep working hard and trying my best for my future. She said that I may not enjoy school but in the end I would regret not learning more.…
“I was once a student.” I was 4 years old when I first entered kindergarten. I remember those times before going to school, my father would tell me to play and mingle with my classmates, be friendly, and not have fight with anyone. Then my mother would say that I should listen to our teacher so I can get stars and expect an award from her if I would do really well. Being a kid, I never questioned why I have to do all of those. I just thought that maybe, those were the best things I must do. Since then, I assumed that maybe that’s how simple the essence of life is --- to socialize, excel, and make my parents proud of me.…
